how to configure Linux for cable modem/D-link router?

My friend asked for help after I installed Susie 7.2 on his old pc he now wants to try it with cable modem and d-link router. Cable modem and d-link already running on his other computer (WinXP Home) so how do I configure it on Linux (remember it is Susie 7.2)?

Set it up to use DHCP. And update man, 7.2 is OLD.

There's no such thing as "Susie 7.2" that I know of and any distribution of Linux should "just work" as long as the D-Link is setup with a DHCP server.

Yeah, I would upgrade that as well. I know that the newer versions were harder to get, but they just released a downloadable iso again for the new version (whereas before it was only by network boot/install across the internet).

I still have Susie 9.1 or 9.2 I downloaded while back but didn't install for him yet I can't remember what his system I believe he is running Pentium 1 or 2 266Mhz and not sure about the memory. I will try to install 9.1 for him. If I do, do I have to clean install or install over 7.2?

Well, I don't know. With such a old machine it may not be worth it to upgrade. Maybe you can get him a new(er) motherboard and cpu for a present?

You could probably upgrade it ok, but since it's such a big gap between revisions it may be painfull. If it had been kept up to date thru the differetn versions it probably would of been ok.

If he uses it a alot I'd just clean up the home directory, then tarball it and copy it to a different machine. Format, install, and then setup a new install and then copy back the home directory and untar it.

watch out for those ~/.filename files and directories that contain user preferences, sometimes newer programs have a hard time dealing with old setups, but most are capable of dealing with it ok.

Which is a much better way to install anyhow.

I didn't even notice he spelled it Susie until Nothinman mentioned it.

Before you upgrade him, just try using DHCP and see if he can get on the net. If not, do a hard reset on the cable modem and try again (just to confirm, with my SB5100 it would lock the MAC address of the client computer until it was hard reset).

As we speak I am using SUSE 9.2 Live DVD to correct a Windows problem with my web browsing.
It found my Cable modem no questions asked. I recommend getting a Live version for yourself, just to see how much better it is.

As far as I know they're still together.
