How to configure 2 wireless routers for best speed? One is N one is G.

Obviously I am the weak link in this set-up, as I don't know jack about networking. Should I piggyback the routers, or run them separately?

The Fios tech CSR set up the router/modem initially, and it works great on my 10/2 link. I followed the directions and got the DIR-825 to work and connect to a 2nd PC with a DWA-160 USB adapter.

I thought that I read somewhere that if you connect two routers "G" and an "N"; the N will revert to the slower speed of the two.
Also does it slow down with higher encription?

They have to have the same encryption to connect, correct?
If so, is there a way to use just the "modem part" of the Fios router, and obtain higher speeds? I'm pretty sure that I still need the "modem" part of the FIOS router, is that correct?
Or, can I just use the wireless D-Link DIR-825 N router in another room with a 3rd PC as long as it's getting a Fios signal. Is there a way to block it from seeing the "G" router? If so, will that allow it to be faster and utilize both bands? Tia.

Thanks for any input.

Is G built into the Verizon? If so, and the firmware in the 825 supports it, you could set the 825 up as a repeater to extend the signal but you are stuck at G speeds.

If the traffic goes through the G router that is going to be the fastest it gets.

I believe so.
If so, is there a way to use just the "modem part" of the Fios router, and obtain higher speeds? You should be able to turn off wireless and connect the 825 to the lan port and just use it.. I'm pretty sure that I still need the "modem" part of the FIOS router, is that correct?Yep

This is a bit confusing but from what I gather the Verizon has built in wireless G and you also the 825. What I would suggest is shutting off the wireless in the Verizon and just use the 825. Don't get to caught up in the G vs N. At your 10/2 connection the G is fast enough.

OP, is your connection from the FIOS ONT to the Actiontec coax (moca) or is it ethernet? Second, if you have two wireless routers, they operate separately as far as the wireless is concerned. If you have one Pre-N router and another G Router, as long as the channels are separte, say one is channel 1 and the other as channel 6 or 11, the wireless would be separate and it wouldn't drop back down at all. This is only in effect if you have say an Pre-N Router and then have B, G, & N clients, most likely the G & N clients speed would be affected due to the B client also being connected. G & Pre-N clients in the same area usually are just fine together in my experience. Also, if you choose, you can reconfigure your Verizon actiontec modem into bridge mode and it'll act as just a dumb modem at that point and you can connect another 3rd party router to it if you like.
