How to clean a CD?

Steve

My dad handed me a couple of minidiscs and told me he had a problem playing them in his laptop. I see that they each have some adhesive residue on them. They've been sitting in promotional cardboard envelopes, but the "glue" holding the sides together has come a bit loose and the discs have slipped into those sticky areas. How can I safely get it off leaving the discs readable?

nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol.

😉

I'd only use NPR as a last resort - it's acetone, and radically attacks a lot of plastics (not all!). I'd try the alcohol and if that doesn't do it, mineral spirits (e.g. naptha would be best, probably, and if you don't have that, paint remover). Acetone is a great solvent, and I always have it handy, but wouldn't try it on a plastic unless all else failed. And then, I'd test on an expendable part of the plastic first if possible.
