How to check area for High Speed Internet?

My area only gets high speed internet through Charter Communications and they are not very high speed. Considering I have a 3.0Mb connection and I have like a 500 - 4000 ms ping depending on the time of day. I checked with Comcast, Knology, Earthlink, Bellsouth and Verizon for other internet options but none of them service my area. I am not looking into satellite internet due to the fact that the latency is horrible for gaming.

Is there a site that tells you what high speed internet options are available to you?

It's not... I can do a direct connection from computer to cable modem and I get the same results on multiple computers.

Is there DSL that does not require a phone line? I was looking at DSLreports.com and it says ADSL does not require a phone line... so how many versions of DSL is out there for consumers?

Contact local chamber of commerce.

What is their site?

http://www.chamberofcommerce.com/

or

http://www.uschamber.com/

Did you forget that you had something called a telephone? Use it.

I don't have the department of commerce on speed dial much less knew that they were in the phone book... 😕

Well now you know what they're called. Call 411, get their number. Call them and ask what are the local available telco/ISP companies. Let them do the work for you. That's what you're paying taxes for.....

Uh... you need a phone line for DSL. But for Phone Service

NO line no connection 😛 You should probably work with a network engineer from Charter or something.

Yeah I thought you needed a phone line for DSL but on dslreports.com it said on ADSL for some services phone line not required...

I also tried with work with charter many times and this problem is reoccuring every month or so for the past few years... only reason I have not already switched is because as far as I know they are the only ones who can service my area without paying 75+ dollars just for internet.

I can not call just yet... still at work.

By "no phone line required" they simply mean you don't have to purchase phone "service" from the phone company (the ability to pick up a phone and make phone calls locally or otherwise). There are companies that do this (Qwest does), but they usually charge a bit more for the DSL alone, just like cable companies charge more if you only buy internet but not cable service.

Yeah I got the copper line ran to my house but switched from a copper phone line to VOIP...

It's normally called Naked DSL meaning you don't have to have an actual local phone number service attached to the DSL line. Some carriers make you have both. Just contact whoever provide the phone service in your area and see what they offer. Specifically tell them you don't have and don't want a local phone number. Or just check them out online and read the fine print as some will say "Require local phone service" and some won't.

I already called my local phone provider (Bellsouth) and they do not offer DSL in my area. 🙁

Have you even opened a ticket with your provider?

Are these the best pings you can get? Have you run a traceroute to these servers to see how far away they are?

Opened multiple tickets over the years...

Pings return around 500 - 4000 ms depending on the time of day...

Traceroutes are good till they hit the gateway server...

Computer to Router 4ms
Router to DNS Server or Gateway 5ms
DNS Server or Gateway to Internet 500ms

I called my local chamber of commerce and they were no help at all... they just stated that they do not have that information and I called a second time and got the same personn as the first time so no luck there...

It's called a "Dry Line" DSL and a lot of companies do offer it but will not advertise it at all.

You'd pretty much have to call up and ask specifically for it.

Edit: I took your question to be "is there a DSL that doesn't require phone service"

But as others have pointed out, you'll need a physical line to connect to.
