you go to NVidia and you order a new card with the name that you like, plug it in, and whala...
your computer starts up with the name you wanted!

har har har, gee man, you should be comedian with material like that! i mean damn... you're so funny!

Dude dont you get why people are being rude to him? He is trying to pass a video card off as something else in otherwords take a 9800np he buys for 239$ making the bios on the card say its a 9800pro and sell it to some poor kid for twice what he purchased it for.

how presumptuous. does your synical mind always jump to negative conclusions about people? does my choice of words give you the impression that i would try and rename it and somehow try and pass it off in the trade forum? if so, you are mistaken. i don't even visit the trade forum and watever gave you the neat little idea that i'm gonna somehow pass the card on by misrepresentation are purely fabricated in your sad little mind. you can put that costume away superman, no need to protect little kiddies from big bad monsters like me.

it started as just a question, but some people can't seem to answer a question without being either a smartarse or a noble know-it-all. i'm sure dishing out some flak back is in order by the way some people insist on being a pest and going with the flow in adding their own little piece of insult just to keep up with whatever bad thing the guy above has said.

Well, you have't really done anything to dispel the notion that you want to change the name because you want to rip somebody off. Maybe people would be a bit more understanding if you could offer a legitimate reason why you would want to do this.

how about... for the simple reason of *i'd like to know how?* has the world emotionally raped all these minds that they automatically assume guilt or think of a dishonest motive behind my question? i personally don't like being pressured to give a explanation for everything but since all of these posters seem so reluctant on offerering advice, here's my reason. Ti4200 with AGP8X (as it appears in the drivers). if this name does not annoy you then that's great, but i find the "with AGP8X" part terrible annoying and want to edit the bastard out of the name and make my Nvidia tab in the display panel a bit neater without the useless and ugly looking crap like "with AGP8X"

seriously, i can't believe so many just jump to conclusions and carry on over a question. how would you like it when someone insults you just because you didn't offer a reason for asking a simple question? is it fair to jump down someone's throat for reasons before offering help?

3Dmark hack!!! who cares about 3Dmark!!! i'm not one of those lames who actually purchases a copy of 3Dmark just so i can upload my score. i don't even have 3dmark03 and 01 isn't instalelld right now. why keep this prog installed unless all you do is play the same old demos over and over again and then go off discussion silly 3dmarks on a forum

He cant and he wont. Since there is not a legitimate reason and he knows it. He is either trying to scam sombody on Ebay or something else just as shady. I honestly hope nobody tells you how to do it smart a$$ or if you try a flash you ruin your video card! I find your retarded comments that touch on everything but the accusation I made in the first place a nice smoke screen.

Have a good day smart A

EDIT The reason he states above is such bs....Who cares honestly if their display tab is clustered? Who spends countless hours staring at it.....I call bs!

Im finished with this topic Have a good day.

comments that touch on everything but the accusation

touching on everything apart from your accusaton? lol, loser. a lot of people replied before you did. your little accusation is nothing more than following the crowd in doing the same old sh!t... i have to respond to a few other replies than just yours. you are not the center of the universe, moron.

since one person specifically requested a reason, i offered one. you can take it or leave it, sad thing is a person who does plan on doing what you guys accused me of could have already came through with the same question only offered what you deem a more acceptable reason.

Look at it this way. Even if you aren't trying to scam someone, i82lazyboy & herop, (which I think are the same person), no one is going to give out that info because even if you don't use it maliciously, anyone else out there reading this board could use it that way. So it's not even an issue of what YOU will do with it, it's what ANYONE who reads this could and would do with it. It's simply potentially dangerous info that really serves no use except to rip someone off. I wouldn't take it personally, but info like that isn't likely to ever be posted here.

So you've just registered this month on AnandTech... you come to the message board and request information that can easily be used to screw someone over... you're asked why you want the information... you reply with snotty smartass remarks... and you think someone's actually going to give you the information you want?

People here on AnandTech don't take kindly to people who's goal is to screw others. If you want to be taken seriously, and want some legitimate answers, don't be such an a-hole... cause it only makes you look guilty of what everyone has accused you of.

Maybe if you go to google and do a search for "leet warez" and "video card hax" you can find the information you're looking for.

... this hero person just came along and joined in :confued;

this guy is NOT, i repeat NOT *I*. i can see your point tho, it could just be one of the above idiots trying to make me look like a skitzo. that's seriously cheap. i'd prefer it if someone who had the ability to check IP's actually looked that up.

mricks86:
your point of some1 else using the info the wrong way is true. i find it hard to believe that no one has ever asked and being denied an answer in such a fashion. when was the last time you had loads of guys go out of their way to try and argue over something like this? would have being much easier to reply what you posted in only 1 reply than their 10 thousand strong.

THANK you for finally clearing it up with a very reasonable response mricks.

Jeff:
i don't care if you take kindly or not. some of the ego's need to be checked and THAT i'm afraid is not snotty comments but the sad fact. it's not a question of being new, it's just a matter of showing that i'm not one at fault and was insulted FIRST!!! why would i sit back and take some of the BS because of the fact i'm new?

I suggest you check your ego... you're new here, you're asking for info that could be used maliciously... if you don't care to explain your reasons, don't expect anyone to enlighten you, and expect people to point out what you COULD be doing.

There is a set of resistors on every GF4 card. Sometimes in different places, all similar in configuration. You can resolder the position of these to get a 4200, 4400, 4600 or Quadro. Performance will be the same of course. Use NVflash to change the actual name of the display in the boot up screen. Might as well change the bios speed to a safe overclock while your at it.

I have a 9500 Pro, 9700 Pro and four Geforce 4 cards. If you 9600 fan boys want to believe the 9600 Pro is so superior by playing around with a synthetic Future Mark, have a party. As I have said many times, a GF4 running 300/650+ at 1600 x 1200 without AA or AF is more than a match for the 9600 Pro in real gaming. 44.03 dets are more than a match for any of the latest Cats in image quality using these settings. And don't bring up the "no AA or AF", cuz at 1600 x 1200 the 9600 Pro isn't gonna cut it, gotta use the 9700 for that. In my honest opinion AA and AF at 1600 x 1200 doesn't make a big difference anyway, it's hard to physically see, but I guess mentally it definately looks better!

Not trying to be rude or anything, just stating the facts as I see them. Maybe this guy is trying to pull something funny by modding his Ti4200, but we can't be sure of that. I thought the purpose of these forums was to share knowledge, not hand out moral judgements.

yes i already knew that. but thanks. P.S. thanks for the civil reply! glad to know there are still some real ppl out there rather than the big ego-maniacs who jump on a good chance to try and insult some1. also many thanks to the all the other ppl who didn't make wise-a$$ comments.

in fact i once attempted to resolder some resisters on my GF2 MX400 and that will result it being turned into a Quadro 2 MXR. this will actually result in a 41% increase in performance cause the clock speed changes.

what i was looking for is not to change it to another model, just to remove some parts of text from the name like i mentioned above.

also the AA and AF @ 1600x1200. couldn't agree more. can barely notice much difference @ 1280x1024 let alone 1600x1200 :|

uh hem, so from what you're saying... i should just sit back and take it because i'm new and everyone can just point out what i *COULD* be doing over a quetion which i didn't even know was asking for this maliciously potent info?

ROFLMAO i can apprechiate your attempt but damn that one really sucked :D. it's not hard to point out nicely since a lot of people decided to start the RIP SOMEONE OFF talk... oh and my initial response of no sh!t was directed straight @ that M4H guy who insisted on being a jackass.

PC ricer - bling bling for the PC I guess. Case modding - case window, internal lighting, external lighting maybe, etc.
Alienware machine - Alienware is a company that makes high performance, high price PC's.

Interesting thought though on all these accusations - if you are selling a PC to someone who knows nothing about them at all, changing the name on the screen won't do anything anyway. There's plenty of ways of fooling people other than a complicated registry hack. (Oops, did I say that?) Wow, actual screenshot. No idea how to do it for the Display window though; maybe that reads the INF file. And I don't know if this will affect the function of the PC; the registry entry initially gave me an access-denied error when I tried to edit it. That security didn't last long.:)
Anyway, fooling people - there's ways to do it, and someone who REALLY wants to do criminal stuff will find ways of doing it. Here, yeah that "wow, comes with AGP8x, the best thing since [insert common saw* here]" could be annyoing, and I see why it would be enticing to remove it.

*saw, n. - A familiar saying, especially one that has become trite through repetition

So I'm a little confused... how exactly are you trying to solve your problem here? If your question truely is innocent, why the hostility? Why not just say, "I didn't realize this question could be taken in such an obscure way. I just wanted to change the name displayed in the drivers to a name that makes more sense to me."
