How to change start up

Hi guys...

well i have this gaming pc and i dont need all these programs running (the ones that start when you boot up,like mcvee and avg...(also i got realplayer loaded, things i dont need to frag online) anyway, how inthe hell am i suppose to know what is ok to keep open and which ones to close? How can i tell my comp just to open only those programs that it needs to run so i can game?

I think you guys get the jist.

(i did have it set to start up in safe mode, and my son decided to go back to the old (everything loads) start up and i don't know how i did that b4.

Type in msconfig, and there will be a startup folder.

Start ---> Run ---> msconfig ---> Go to start up tab and uncheck any proggie that you don't want running when you start up your pc ---> apply ---> reboot.

yea that was the command.. but on a side note, how do i know what to stop running on start up.. like i need realplayer on startup... or some dvd program..(youknow) anyway, thanks again!!

I would not recomend BlackViper to this guy, It's a diasaster wating to happen. I don't think he has enough knowlege to mess with his services, because he is making a very basic mistake of running TWO ANTI-VIRUS SCANNERS AT ONCE. Any one who has any simple knowlege of software knows this is a NO-NO. But Always back-up the registry before disableing your services, because disableing the wrong one can have catastrophic results like a PC that wont boot.

? so its bad to have more then one virus scan on a comp?

i have all the free good ones:

AVG
AD-aware Se
and microsoft anti.

and they only run when i want them to run.

and i like using msconfig. I know enough to only turn off programs that i know i dont need.. ie. realplayer and anything else that i am not using. I usually go to task manager and under process turn them off.. (on my other comp, it would load the ipod programs at boot, so i would just turn them off.

What Operating System are you using? What version of Windows do you have?

AVG is the only virus scanner you have, the others are spyware adware removers. You are OK.

HEHE.. yes i do have McAfee (it came with the dell of course). i uploaded AVG Free and AD-aware Se
and microsoft antispyware. I deleted McAfee (there was a link in hot deals to a new one and it gave me errors).

I dont mind going into the registry, but i tend to avoid it.

Not sure why its bad to have 2 anti-virus's but that doesnt matter to much. I am bright enough to know when something is above me and looking at that link, it was not what i wanted to mess with. (its the ol' if you don't know what it is, dont delete it).

I have seen this happen many times before, Two Anti-Virus scanners can and will cause the data on the Hard Drive to become corrupt. My less knowledgeable younger sister did this to her HP laptop when she installed Noroton AV and Panda AV on the same computer. All AV scanners have incompatabilties by nature not just norton and panda, It's well documented and many magazenes have wrote about other people having problems with their computer after adding a second 3rd party scanner.

P.S. My sister lost all of her data when she installed the second scanner.

When it comes to antispyware I think Microsoft's Beta is worthless. In addition to Adaware I would get Spybot and Spywareblaster.

Something I noticed the other day: I was running some of my spyware utilities and caught Intermute's "Spysubtract" turning off some of my Spywareblaster's protections. Then later on spysubtract would catch the spyware that it allowed in by turning off existing protections. So much for that 30 day trial.

Seems like "spyware" is the racket of the year.
