How to change read only settings on folders in XP pro?

i did a search last week, and found a thread created around 12-15-02, i tried what they said in it. turning off simple file sharing, and then right click-properties-security-advanced-replace permission on child objects. ok this didnt work for me, when i turn off the read only setting, it turns off, but then i recheck it, and its back :| wow how frustrating. what am i not doing?

The folders aren't actually read only, if you click the box again you will see that it then puts a check mark in the box, now it's read only.
Annoyances.org had an a reason why XP does this when someone posted the same question on their forum but I can't find the link now.
