How to change computer name without changing full computer name?

The computer name seems to be linked to the full computer name so that whenever I change it in System Properties, the full computer name gets automatically changed to that as well, which I don't want. Any suggestions?

Maybe I am not understanding you but the full computer name is PCNAME.domainname. You cannot have a PC named BOB and still have its full name be JOHN.domainname.

The computer name was PCNAME and the full name (in system properties) was PCNAME-PC. I changed the computer name and now both are in the format of PCNAME whereas I still want PCNAME-PC for the full name.

How about posting some screen shots of what you are talking about. The only place you can change the PC name is in system properties, but the way you describe it it sounds like you are doing it in two different locations.

Also, whats the purpose of having both (if they indeed can be) different?

Well, can't give you screenshots as it's not my laptop. And yes, I'm changing it in system properties and only in system properties.
When I start typing or deleting the characters in the field for the Computer Name, it starts doing the same for the Full Computer Name right below it even though it's not an editable field. When the Full Computer Name changed along with the Computer name, a scheduled task got screwed up because it was still under the old full name (no biggie as I just recreated the task). However, it's still nice to have the two different. Otherwise, what's the point of having two?

All I can say is that the computer name and full computer name are the same (minus the domain component). The only other thing I can think of is the NetBIOS name which doesn't have to match the computer name (though in the vast majority of cases it does). Typically that is set when windows is installed, or if your on a domain an admin can set it in AD (unlikely for your situation).

Whats the point in having 2? Well I assume in your case none, as there isn't 2 (typically). In a business environment it is used for backwards compatibility.

It's not 2 names, the Full Name is a more descriptive name which includes the domain.

If you're on a workgroup, then they'll be same because you don't have a domain...
