Cottontail can not be trained to be a pet.
They are simply wild and different from domestic pet rabbit.

Having a pet is the same be it you have a dog, a cat or a rabbit.
Domestic rabbit can live up to 12 yrs while cottontail usually live around 3-4 yrs.
Pet rabbit can be train to use litter box and they are smart.
However, all kind of pet needs commitment, not just a spur of the moment kind of thing.
Domestic rabbit need interaction with their owner and not just put in a cage all day.

I work as a volunteer at local rabbit rescue and if any of you are interested in rabbit, please consider adopting one instead of buying from a pet store.
Any other question about rabbit as a pet, feel free to pm me or post it here.

Well then shooting them doesn't seem to be solving the problem, does it?

if you put a pancake in your backyard the rabbit's natural instinct will be to try to get underneath the pancake so it can wear the pancake like a hat

<FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #f3f3f3">1 Tie a length of string to a stick.
2 Prop box or crate up with the stick. (Place heavy object on top if using cardboard box or lightweight crate.)
3 Place bait under box.
4 Run string, to an observation point, suitable distance from trap.
5 Pull string, causing crate to fall, when rabbit is in position to be trapped under box.
6 ****** the rabbit.

Alternatively build a trap with a trigger in which the rabbit will release itself.

we got a ton in the area this year.

A neighbor puts moth balls down around the plants/vegetables because supposedly they don't like the smell and avoid them...

I only get racoons in my back yard. They are always fighting.

Along with the baby rabbits, we also get lots of squirrels, which will run and play all over the yard and in the trees, and they'll come up and take food out of your hand, climb on you, etc. It's cute. We also had a chipmunk for a while that you could pick up and hold in your hand. He was teh ultra-cutAy

Get naked, paint yourself orange and wear a green hat. Now, lay in wait for the rabbit and grab it once it get close enough. For documentional purposes you should get up a camera and record it all, then place said video on the web...

if you put up chicken wire, make sure you bury part of it cause they can dig right under easily.

This reminds me of a couple of lame jokes my grandma used to tell me:

How do you catch a unique rabbit?
Unique up on him!

How do you catch a tame rabbit?
Tame way, unique up on him!

heh ... I've got a stack of 3" PVC sewer pipe back behind the garage. Last weekend, one of my dogs had a piece drug out into the middle of the yard, and was going nuts chewing on the end of the pipe, pushing it around, etc. I went up and had a look and saw there was something in it. Took it into the garage, and put one end in a spare cage, and tilted it up until a baby rabbit slid out ... bout the size of my fist. Made sure it was ok, put the dog away, then took it out and let it go.

so ... get a piece of pipe & a dog :D
