how to boot w/o graphics card

I'm building a headless file server and I want to conserve every amount of power that I can. Is there anyway to boot the computer w/o a graphics card?
 
use onboard. simply don't connect a monitor. the BIOS runs a POST check everytime you turn on the computer. without a graphic card, the computer just won't post. just as PC Surgeon said.
