There are plenty of places to acquire "white-hat" skills. Most resources are going to assume that you already have pretty detailed knowledge of how computer software is built, though.

Visiting every 2600 meeting helps.

Please note that undercover police or secret service sometimes attend those meetings.
It is fun just to hang out and listen to everyone talk about various tech subjects.

The meetings are for the noobs as well as the well versed hacker and they try to move the chats to other locations and the 2600 magazine is against that 100%
