Yea, most likely, unless you're spending a lot of time in the hume thread. The gifs really eat into data.

Your best bet for rooting is to do a search. Try something like "root moto x", or search xda specifically. I don't know how to do that phone right off the bat, but don't accept any ota updates until you see what's happening with the phone. Updates can patch exploits used to gain root, and you can lose the opportunity until a new exploit is developed.

Does this mean that if I'm already on the latest update on my Verizon Moto X non-Dev that I cannot root my device at all? Even with a downgrade? I haven't rooted, unlocked, removed wp or anything on this phone yet, just getting tired of waiting for Lollipop and figured i'd look into cm12.

Is there a way to make it so specific apps use WiFi and other apps use cell data? I would like my browsers to use data and would like the Pandora app to use WiFi. Anyway to do this? Thanks

I haven't read this entire thread but I found the following info with a simple Google search:

First things first. If you have 4.4.2 on an AT&T or Verizon X, just stop reading here. Your phone cannot be rooted at this time. Sorry, but there's nothing that can be done right now. I will update this if a root method is found.

Okay, if you're still reading, you should go download this package of two basic tools that anyone interested in modifying their Android device should have. It contains ADB and Fastboot. You may or may not use them for this tutorial, but they're handy to have anyway. Unzip the file to your desktop or C drive or wherever. Just remember where they are. When you need to use them, go into that folder and right click in the empty space while holding Shift. Choose "Open command window here" to start using the tools. Any files you're flashing or pushing to your device should also be moved here when you need them, just to make things easier.

Now, back up everything you want to keep from your phone, because the majority of these procedures will erase everything on your phone.

Make sure you have the latest drivers installed.

I'm trying to root the Verizon Mobile x but in developer tools I can't find the ome switch. I don't see it 🙁
 
Damn, the moto x is a decent phone technically, although the battery life sucks. Gonna exchange it for a note 4. Will the Verizon note 4 have the same locked boot loader as the moto x? Really want to use the afwall+ and adaway apps

Only the developer edition of the Note 4 on Verizon is unlocked. Pretty sure you need to buy that outright.

If you really want to get something on Verizon that you can root / install custom ROMs on then you need to spend some time at xda and see what is available first. If you can live with something older, go to swappa and look for a rooted device being sold used (like a Note 3).
 
I personally don't have a phone that I use for that I guess.

I'll get blasted maybe I guess, but I do not carry a phone around usually.

The wife usually web surfs at the house in our wifi area here I guess.

But a Verizon note 4 can be rooted easier than the Verizon moto x, right?

I could be wrong about this, so you might ask at Verizon.

My understanding is that the Note 4 developer edition is a special phone that is not offered at a contract price. You need to buy the phone outright because they don't offer the normal subsidized price on that particular phone. That is what I was told at our local Verizon, but those people have been wrong before.
 
Is the verizon HTC one m8 rootable?

Or the new Verizon nexus?

If cell provider bandwidth is the issue, why wouldn't you just use wifi as much as you possibly can, whenever you can?

And if you're streaming Pandora through you cell phone provider, you may not have to look much further for what's eating up your data allocation.

I haven't been using Pandora on my phone, but would like to separate which apps use cell data and which use WiFi. If I rooted I could do this with an app called afwall+ then I'd be able to use cell data with the browser and use WiFi with Pandora. And also an app called adaway to get rid of ads when I browse

Again... If preserving cell bandwidth is a priority: Why would you want to do this? If you have a wifi connection, why not use it for everything while you have it?

I can understand the OP's issue. I only get 2GB per month of data, and our IT department at work (I would call them what I really think of them but ...) has decided to no longer allow us to connect to WiFi with our phones. Even when not doing data heavy things like streaming, going over the data cap becomes a concern at that point.
