the only time i played basketball was for gym class at public school. and noone ever taught how to play it properly.

How do you do properly shoot, dribble, defend, etc?

Step one: Get off of your ass and outside.
Step two: practice.
Step three: repeat.

Basketball is one of those sports where, if you're goofy, no matter how much you practice you will suck your whole life.

Not true. But the later you start, the less of a chance you have at picking it up and becoming good, just like any other sport. Best way to learn is to go to the nearest basketball court near you and just ask some people playing if you can join a game. Be up front about the fact that you suck. After a while, you should catch on and with practice become at least decent.

If you're old already and you're doing this for fun, it probably really isn't worth all the effort and practice that it would take to become any good.

Hustle, hustle, hustle

you will notice that people will look past your apparent lack of ability if you are the first one to loose balls, hit the boards, and D up everytime down the court

i play pretty regularly and have been playing for a while, and one of my friends wanted to get into it...so i took him with me whenever i went and you basically have to play against good people who are serious about playing(e.g. no one wearing flip-flops). So just go down to a park where people play and just try to get the hang of it. And its a pretty complex game, so try to understand the little things that some of the better players do and try to replicate it. So , as long as you keep playing, i think you'll keep improving.

oh and play on your strengths...if you're well built, go to work down low in the post....or if you're quick, try to ask for the ball and create a shot for yourself...basically if you find one thing you're good at, people will focus on that which will open up other things for you. like if you're quick and you can take people of the dribble, they'll play you loose, which can then give you more open shots...etc.

and defense...as long as you play good d, people will want you on their team.

Get someone that you know has been taught how to play the right way, and ask them to teach you the basics.

Start with dribbling, then passing, then shooting (with layups), then boxing out and rebounding, and go from there. It should take months to master these skills, but you'll need to be running and building endurance while doing all of this.

He should tell you some drills/exercises that will help you develop your skills (eg footwork on layups, how to hold the ball correctly for the backspin while you shoot).

Good luck!

Alright... Here's what you do. Go to the nearest court and ask if you can join in a game.

To do this say "Anyone got next?"
If no, call next and ask people if they want to play with you.
If yes, then ask if you can play with them.

Simple. The only way you're gonna get good is to practice, there's a reason why I'm 5'8" and I can dunk.
