I'm looking for a reliable way to back up "middle of the road" chunks of data, say 10 to 20 gig. Seems using cd would be kinda a bad idea, that'd be around 25 to 50, give or take....But I dont know if tape is really a feasable option. I dont wanna break the bank, and want something very reliable and seperate from my system i.e., not anouther hd in the case for backup...Any thoughts? Is tape backup relatively priced (as in 1-200?) what about DVD-R? The dvd's are like 20 or 30 apeice, and its not an official standard yet is it?

Hmm, maybe a Compaq Proliant RAID 5.....Ya, that'd do it....Lemme just go buy a powerball tkt.....Anyways, thoughts?

For rotating backups plus permanent archives, I've got to vote for tape or DVD. Doing tape right is expensive, but it's also eaasy to arrange for unattended backups. Not so with DVDs, at least when concerned with the quantity of data you're talking about.

I think you're absolutely right. Backing up to hard drive is a nice ancillary backup method, but it won't do for data that is not replaceable. You absolutely have to have external media for that. I have dual backups, with offsite storage of one copy. I use both rotating and permanent archive strategies. If you have a high speed Internet connection, paying a service for online storage can be a viable option, too. (I don't trust any of them enough to use them as my one-and-only, however.)

Zipperhead, broadband or not, 10-20 gigs is a lot of space. :) And I don't know of any service that lets you backup that much information.....
