This story was very interesting...as much as I want to quickly come to the conclusion that this "Newton" guy is abusing the system, I do enjoy the fact that at least this is a concrete example of tenants being able to take their landlords to court and win. At least this shows there are avenues in which (in Newark) tenants have the legal power to get suitable housing.
also, apparently tenants have the legal power to set their landlord's house on fire.

If the legal loopholes exist, is the guy "really" in the wrong to use the holes?

In this case, yes he is wrong to use those holes, as it violates the spirit of the laws. Plus, he's breaking the apartments and then using uninhabitability as an excuse.

So why can't he pass the BAR and represent other people therefore making a real living instead of leeching off the NJ court system?

And using those loopholes to not just benefit himself but also screwing the landlord on purpose. This guy and family are pieces of shit and deserve a baseball bat to their heads.

What'd be funny is if someone set his house on fire in the middle of the night. Doesn't help to have all those security cameras out front when they're.all.melted.

Is the guy wrong for what he is doing? Yes, I think he is.

Is the state laws and our legal system wrong for allowing such abuses? Yes, I think they are.

The issue here is not the guy working his way through the system, its the fault of the system for allowing him to do so.

He's not just using legal loopholes, he is committing crimes. He is vandalizing other peoples property and filling false police reports. That goes way beyond using legal loopholes.

Yeah, its quite strange that he has damaged property where he lives, but no one has been able to charge him with it.

In order to be eligible to sit for the NJ BAR Exam, one must have received a J.D. from an ABA approved law school. I doubt that he is interested in paying for or sitting through 3 years of law school or that he could have the requirement waived.

Besides, his kinds of tactics wouldn't necessarily be valuable to clients: Generally tenants are being evicted because they are broke and therefore don't have a lot of money to pay their attorneys. Delaying themselves being evicted is only worthwhile if they don't have to actually pay for it, the appearances will all add up and end up costing more than the rent. 2 appearances per month would probably run you more than the $500 in rent he was supposedly on the hook for.

I wonder how much he is actually making per hour doing this. Going to court 5 times a month plus all the prep work to save $500 on rent probably only comes out to less than $20/hour.

It's not legal loopholes, he loses almost all of his cases. He's just using delaying tactics: having judges recuse themselves, moving jurisdictions etc.

He's exploiting the fact that the judicial system bends over backwards to be fair to indigent people.

Mark me down in the "surprised he hasn't been killed by an accidental gas leak/house fire accident that started in the middle of the night" column.

He's either really good about picking landlords or really lucky that one of them wasn't some Eastern block European who would have no trouble "fixing" his tennant problem.
