im planning on buying a used dive watch from a watch forum that priced at $650. the seller accepts paypal. we both live in LA. what's the best way to go thru with this transaction?

sorry for sounding ignorant, but anything i have bought online i have ussally done it thru a legitimate vendor like amazon or gone thru ebay using paypal. i dont want to get scammed for $600 by some guy on a watch forum.

ps he has no feedback on the forum and only has a single post advertising the watch.

thanks

If you're bound and determined to buy this watch, find a retailer in the area that sells those watches. Meet the seller at the shop and have the watch shop check it out before giving the seller a dime.
That's about as much as you can do to ensure that it's a legitimate working watch.

Personally, I think the two posters above me have given you the best advice...

Is the watch at a "too good to be true" price? If so, you know the drill. If it is fair market value, then take the necessary precautions and meet at a watchmakers shop to verify.

In person is the only way to do it. Treat it like a craigslist transaction. IE meet in a public space. If you don't know enough about it to verify authenticity yourself, the watch shop is a good idea. FWIW there are some really high quality fakes out there that won't be immediately apparent if you don't know the model.

Jesus I couldn't imagine spending that much on a watch with minimal compute in 2014.

I get that watches are jewelry for men, the part I don't understand is why a man would willingly get trapped in the scam that is jewelry. Its not like with women where they have been conditioned since birth to think jewelry equals affection and love....

As others have mentioned, I'd be hesitant to purchase something off one of the watch forums unless someone else will vouch for them first.

I've bought and sold many watches up to that value but always made sure to have good feedback from them first.

Edit: if you live in the same area why don't you just meet face to face? That's what I did for one of my $600 watches.

Better yet, reach into your pocket and look at your cell phone.

Jewelry.

And they didn't have:

-computers
-smartphones
-the internet
-airplanes
-cars
-etc

The point is times have changed and so have our needs. A watch has a practical aspect to it that is still relevant today. Heck I wouldn't mind a smartwatch.

Jewelry on the other hand has no purpose other than to placate the animalistic part of our minds that wants a shinier object than the next monkey has to impress the female of the species.

Oh well, at least a jewelry watch has some sort of purpose so there is some real-life value. Much better than the diamond industry that is basically a worldwide monopolist scam.

Actually they did have computers, 'cars', and a lot of that.

The rich and successful know humanity loves the colored bird.

I am hoping you are very successful to think otherwise.

Most of the times this kind of stuff is professed by some person still living at home and in debt.

You don't see really rich men wearing jewelry. What does Bill Gates, or Zuckerberg wear? It's men with just a little bit of money who try to act like they have more than they do that flaunt jewelry.

Nice edit, but usually men that talk about men with small penises, have one.

Bill Gates is ultra conservative, you may want to look into the eyeglass frames he wears and then his mega yachts and the like.

Zuckerberg is promoting this anti-watch stuff, but is he just living in a simple 3/2 ranch style home.

When you are a billionaire, things drastically change.

Most wearing a nice watch aren't really trying to FLAUNT.

this whole debate is lame because $600 isn't even that much for a nice watch. we get it, you don't get watches. don't judge us and we won't judge you.
