When you're at a friend's place drinking, and you're fairly drunk at 1:00AM, you can just stop drinking, and then stay out till 4:30 before you drive home. After 3 and a half hours, you'll be ok to drive home. Unfortunately, your head will hurt a bit and you'll be getting sorta tired, but at least you won't be drunk.

My head hurts and I'm tired. I'm gonna go to sleep.

disclaimer:taking this advice without ACTUALLY understanding the rate at which your body metabolises alcohol and how much you've drunk could lose you your licence...

Here, two standard drinks in the first hour, and one every hour after that should keep the normal adult below .05, which is the WA legal limit.

3 and a half hours is nowhere near enough for me, I can feel fine after about 4 hours of no drinking/sleep after a night out but I know I'm nowhere near sober enough to chance being caught. Real friends lend you the couch. :)

For every RTO that causes injury (even a sore little finger) then all drivers involved are legaly required to take a breath test for alcohol. When this was introduced it alarmed many people that they were still over the limit when drivingto work the next morning (even after a half-decent nights sleep and food)

1. Don't drink
2. Drink at home
3. Call a cab
4. Stay overnight where you are drinking
5. Don't drink enough to actually get drunk

this is terrible advice

being more sober than you were 3 hours ago doesn't mean you are good to drive

Umm... No... Not when I usually consume 18-24 beers. I call a cab or we have a DD.

Sometimes 3.5 hours is enough, but sometimes it's not.
Shadowknight's suggestions are the best.

This thread was just asking for this:

"Next time you are too drunk to drive, Walk to the nearest pizza shop, Place an order, And when they go to deliver it, Catch a ride home with them."

:D

but yeah in general if you're still awake you'll be decent to drive. Of course, use your best judgement, cause sometimes you seem to sober up in a couple of hours and other times you go to bed hammered at 3-4 AM, wake up at 10-11am, still feel hammered, cash out till 2pm, still feel pretty champed. LOL
