How to avoid automatic execute in Win XP?

I severely dislike the Win XP-feature that pops up every time I insert a CD in the CD-rom-drive: "do you want to view images, etc., bla-bla-bla"..... - Can I disable it?

Also: I would like to make ACDSee my default picture viewer, but even though I choose it as default image viewer in the program, Win XP insists on opening pictures in the dysfunctional XP picture viewer instead... - Any way to get rid of the XP-viewer as the default viewer?

Thx,

To set a program.. right click on your picture file and choose open with, choose program and put a checkmark in Always open with this program. Click okay.
Now try double clicking on that picture file and see if the program you just set opens it.

Below was originally posted by btvillarin as far as I know.

To turn off auto insert notification in XP:

Start, Run and type in: gpedit.msc

Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System
Disable "Turn off Autoplay"

Thanks a lot AKA: I'm a bit embarrassed regarding the choice of picture viewing program: it's of course the same procedure as in Win 98.

However, I didn't find the gpedit.msc. Maybe because it's a French-language Win XP... - However, I couldn't find anything similar, so I'm still a bit lost regarding the "turn off auto insert notification"....

Anyway, many thanks,

Group Policy is what it is.

Simple easy way to get to it is click on Help & Support and type in Group Policy.. it will bring up search results. There is a direct link to it from there.

Can't even find that, sorry!

Maybe it's because you have Win XP Pro? We have the "Home" version - It says that there is no option to use "group policy"....

the Group Policy editor does not exist on the home versions. (nor can you simply copy it over from a pro machine) Just another limitation of the home version. (you'll notice you can't log into domains with home either)

I believe you can disable home autoplay using the powertoys for winxp (you'll have to find it though) I don't remember the reg entry off hand.
