I have 40+ pcs in my office that are use for data processing , but there are NOt connected to the net, so I'm wondering how to collect the the WU's if I install Seti on them.
I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that they are networked within the same domain (which I can't control), getting IPs address from a DHCP server, and running Win98.
I would find one computer that has a static ip (DHCP server or such if you have access) and install setiq on it. Sneekernet setiq new wu's from a cd and results with floppies. Just cut and paste them from a setiq you would have running at your house or other location of internet access. Couple other thread out there right now talking about similar problems might want to check those out for more info.
Are they connected to a central server which could then be accessed by another machine that is connected to the internet?
ie;
Data machines work group----->DHCP Server<---------internet machines workgroup---------->berkeley🙂
SetiQ would have to be set up on the DHCP Server and then cut and paste results and wu's in and out or copy whole Q in, run, copy out, send and refill repeat as necessary.
The DHCP server has to have a Static address I would think for the -proxy xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:yyyy
I believe a machine name will work also for the proxy........
Here's another thought.. just because the machines get their IP from a DHCP server doesn't mean you can't set one machine up with a static IP within the range specified - I do it at home and at work. I just pick an IP at the upper end of the range to use as a "static" IP for the SetiQ server, and point the rest of the "herd" to that server to get the WUs.
I haven't encountered any problems doing this at all. 🙂
Any computer that can browse to the 'server' in Windows Explorer can use the computer name in the -proxy line. That way, all of the clients will continue to flush to the correct computer, regardless of the IP address.
I have another idea, and I need your suggestions. Can I use the IP address (static) of one pc that I know it has internet access and is not on the day that I'm planning to use it ? In that way I will set up SetiQ in my pc and assimilate the rest and set them up with a different IP address (a higher #, within the range of the dynamic) and once a week when that Internet pc is off I will be able to use to flush and get new WU's. How that sounds?
In a way, yes, what I meant is that I have in my deparment one pc that is connected to the net (is not mine), but I can get the IP from that pc, and use it in my pc when that other pc is not on. I hope that you understand what I'm saying.
Oh, so you're running SETIQ most of the time on the computer with internet access, and then when that computer is off you're going to change the IP# of your computer to the one of the computer with internet access? Makes sense. 🙂
LOL, no, I'm planning to run SetiQ in my pc, and then once a week I will borrow from the one that has the static IP that IP and use it on my pc, so I can dl and upload the WUS. What do you think?
I don't know how it will work though. 😉 How is just changing IP#s suddenly going to get you internet access? Is your internet access only allowed to certain IP#s or something?
The idea is to get all the setting from the other pc, which is not in use during the weekend and use it in my pc and go from there. And yes, only certain pcs are allow to get to the net, via static IP and gateway.
