how to ask for a higher salary.

so I applied internally through my company for a job position. Got rejected the first ime, but now, he called me again about the job,and I feel I have a pretty good chance of getting it. The manager over there called me and told me that he is still going through all the interviews, but as of now, I am high on his list now, and said he will consider me first. he told me to just apply again, and there might not be another interview for me.

my question is if it is even possible to ask for an increase in salary, and if so, how do I word it over the phone?

the job is technically in the same 'salary grade/bracket' as my current job, but to me, I feel/hope there should be a salary increase. He already advised me that the 'salary grade' doesnt change with the new position.


However, in my company, the new job is traditionally a very competitive position, and only the best people get chosen.

whether there is an increase or not, I might end up doing it anyways just because of the new opportunity, but if there is a chance for a salary increase, I want to at least bring it up.

question:
1. how do I bring up the topic of salary increase, without making him think differnt of me.
2. call him and ask him now, as if I"m gathering information?
3. discuss with him when the actual job offer comes in?

Him: "Sure, go ahead"
You: "Is there any chance for an increase in compensation if and when I accept this new position?"

"I really want this new job title. Only the best contributors get the job, but I'm thinking of letting them screw me over and not give me a salary increase."

If it's a competitive spot and you get it then you should be paid higher. Ask for 20% and go from there. Have some balls or you'll get taken advantage of (also maybe have a plan B job if you want to go all out).

"May I please have more money"? is going to get a no 9 times out of 10. Tell them you're worth the increase.

They already know you want more money. Every working stiff in the world wants more money. If they have multiple qualified candidates and he already implied that there would be no raise (the "same pay grade" line), I wouldn't hold my breath.

EDIT: That having been said, asking probably won't hurt your chances of getting the job. But I wouldn't expect much.

Nuts to that, same pay band doesnt mean same salary unless he's over the pay band. They budgeted for the position and if it's competitive I'll bet they budgeted higher than he makes right now.

They won't offer him anything if he doesn't ask.

I agree that he should ask for more. But it is in the manager's best interest to get the most qualified person for as little money as possible. If he can get OP into the job without a raise, then he should do it, regardless of budget. Now, if he is working for a nice guy, great! Maybe he gets paid more. If I was trying to tell someone that they wouldn't get a raise, I would probably phrase it as "it's in the same pay grade".

try for the job.. if you get it, ask for more.. the worst your manager can say is "no" and that'll be that.. he wont' be like "WHAT!!! you want more money! forget it, you go back to your old job, even though we determined you qualified for this position, and we'll hire someone less qualified, just becuase you want more money! you greedy bastard"

if they want you in that position, that means you're the best for the job.. ask for more... if it's more responsibility, then they should be reasonable and give you more.. if they don't, find another job..

yeah, ask for the pay increase AFTER you've been offered the job. once they commit to you, it's harder for them to back away from your candidacy. it's no guarantee you'll get the raise, but talking about the pay before you've been offered the job is kinda pointless anyways.

oh yeah, if you can get the offer in writing before you negotiate salary, so much the better! it then becomes really hard for the employers to renege.
