How-to apply arctic silver to P4 woody (1.6A) ?

Soon I got all components to build my 1.6A system 😀 (only the samsung 2700 that is somewhat delayed)

I'm a newbie at this and have never before applied thermal compound to a CPU so I would like to make sure I get it right!

I've read the instructions how-to apply arctic silver on CPUs at http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm and it says: "Note that on the Intel P4, the compound is applied to the integral heat spreader. (The metal cap that covers the actual CPU core.)"

Also on that page there is a picture of a P4 and it appears that there is a tiny "hole" on the lower right corner of the CPU. Is that something that i should not cover with the termal compound?

Anything else i should think about (apart from what the instructions says) ?

While I'm at it I might as well ask if I should put some arctic silver on my Gf4 Ti4400 before i use it, and if i should, if there's anything I should think about when aplying it to that CPU ?

I`ve heard to fill the hole with grease.
I too was a little surprised at the "extended" application process versus "regular" HS grease.

So I should fill it with ac, then?! 😎
 
Put a light coat of arctic silver on the cpu and spread it across the entire surface. Do not glob it on, just a light coating will do. Do not worry about the hole, just apply right over it. I then apply AS to the bottom of the heatsink roughly the same size as the die on the CPU. Again, do not glob it on, it does not require too much AS. Make sure you take off the thermal pad that comes on the bottom of the OEM heatsink or whatever heatsink you use.

I just built a system with the 1.6a and an ASUS p4b266-c and couldnt be happier. The CPU doesnt stutter one bit at 2.4 ghz and it is running at 38-40c under load with stock heatsink/fan. Compare that to my AMD 1700+ system running at stock speed at 50c with a 8000 rpm Delta fan. Cant beat it!!!

I am using the stock heatsink/fan that came with the cpu and my case has one exhaust fan in the rear and one fan on the PS. Dont know what type of fans, just generic. Thats it. It is in my basement so it is a little cooler down there but not freezing by any stretch. Room temperature is around 66 degrees F. These temps. are taken with ASUS PC Probe so I dont know how accurate these temps are.

These CPU's are freaks of nature!
 
🙂Does your cpu temp in bios match with temp on asus probe?I'm asking because to be O/C that much with one case fan ,one fan on psu, and stock hsf, to be 38-40c under load seems to be low .😉
 
I actually havent checked and I cant for a few days either because I'm running a Wolfenstein server off this computer right now. I'm waiting for more RAM in a few days so when I shutdown for that I will check.

I can tell you one thing though, the air blowing out of my AMD case is noticeably warmer than the P4 case is spitting out. When I run my AMD system, I can turn the heat off in my house 🙂
 
I found the best way to put AS on a P4 is to put it first on the heatsink and then put a rubber glove on like a doctor wares when you don't want to see him and use your finger to rub the AS on the processor, You can get it really nice with your finger and with controll, Then rub the rest on the heatsink hard and for some time, The wipe lightly with lint free what ever, I to have a P4 1.6@2.133 and in the bios never gets over 35C with stock heatsink
