If you want it to be secure, I think you will have to. I was going to do it, but I didn't think it was secure enough, and I didn't want to bend my clips.

I did not have to bend the clips. I did have to make sure the fan power wires were not pinched under the clips because at first the clips would keep popping off the upper right fan hole. I rewired them to go under the clips and the clips have stayed in the holes ever since. If you look at them pictures you can see the wires going downwards not interfering with the clips no more.

This isn't like adding a new 50$ heatsink but it does help on the known fact of a dead spot. I did see improvements with my Tornado and SLk800 combo. If you are in good temps and your machine can't overclock any higher due to voltage and stablity then this won't help much, but if yoiu just want a tad bit better temps thats what this can do. Different fan and heatsink combo's most likely have different results. I had a old temp controled smart fan around that would make a ungodly noise so it wasn't hard for me to gut it out and try this mod out. Once I found all I had to do is move the clips and secure it like any other fan without attaching the two together it was well worth my 5mins of time.
