My LAN:
Computer 1: Win98SE, Linksys Lne 10/100 ethernet card; HP Photosmart Printer
Computer2: Win98SE, Linksys Lne 10/100 ethernet card; HP 970cxi Printer
Computer 3: WinXP Pro, D-Link 530+ ethernet card
Linksys BEF41 router
Surfboard Cable Modem
Computer 1& Computer 2 are on the LAN sharing printers, hard drives, internet access. Network protocols are TCP/IP & NETBEUI.
Computer 3 was newly added and has no printer. When I installed WinXP Pro, internet access awas there without me having to modify settings. I enabled sharing of the hard drive and then on computer 3 I can now see and share files with Computer 1 but not computer 2. I did nothing else with WinXP and networking.

Now:
Computer 1 can shares files and its printer with Computers 2 & 3.
Computer 2 can share files and printer with COmputer 1 only.
Computer 3 can share files with COmputer 1.

ow do I fix computer 3 so that it will share files with computer 2 and be able to print on Computer 2's printer?

Jack MDS:
Thanks. Check out all the info you had posted tp no avail. I cannot seem to find the problem. Computer one sees all shared hard drives on computers 2 & 3 and shares a printer on computer 2.
Computer 2 sees the shared hard drive and shared printer on computer 1, but does not see the shared hard drive on computer 3.
Computer 3 sees the shared hard drive and printer on computer 1 but not on computer 2.
Computer 1 & 2 use Win 98SE. Installed network protocols are TCP/IP & NetBEUI.
Computer 3 uses Windows XP Pro. The only thing I did to computer 3 is share a hard drive. All of the settings in the references in your post appear correct.
Should I add NetBEUI on WinXP Pro? If NetBEUI is the problem, then why can Computer access files on Computer 1's Hard Drive and use Computer 1's priner?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks

Try to add NetBEUI to the XP setting.

Take a look here to be able to find NetBEUI XP.

NETBEUI in WinXP

Make sure that NetBEUI is checked as default protocol on all three computers.

Make sure that File and Printer Sharing is bound to NetBEUI.

Unbind TCP/IP from File and Printer sharing on all computers.

Alternative approach:

Disconnect the XP computer (since it is harder to set network on XP). Make sure that the two Win98 computers have a solid and totally functional Network.

At such a point add Win XP, and see how it works. Doing so you can isolate WinXP problems from the rest of the Network.

Have a good luck.

Jack MDS, can you help me install NetBEUI into WinXP? I have copied the files nbf.sys & netnbf.inf as per http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=84
But when I " Open Network Connection Properties under Control Panel" and try to "click the Install... button to add the NetBEUI protocol", there is no install button.
Furthermore, I use this site "http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/netbeui.htm" for binding NETBeui and unbinding TCP/IP on Windows 9, but don't follow on WinXP Pro.
Any guidance or tutorials for WinXP would be graetly appreciated. I would be your indentured servant forever.
Thanks

I assume (hence this question) that you're logged in to Windows XP w/ Administrator privileges?

Also, the Win NT family doesn't share printers/files with computers, it shares them with USERS. What USER is logged on at each/either of the Win98 boxes when you're trying to view the XP box?

All that said, do what JackMDS said about NetBEUI and unbindings, etc...

Check your workgroup name on the XP box.The default is MyGroup not workgroup.Ive seen people get thrown with that one.TCP/IP will work fine.Just make sure Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled on the XP borg..I mean box.

I checked workgroup and that is fine. I did check Netbios over TCP/IP, under NetBios settings, default was checked. I still cannot access the third computer and its printer. Thanks for your help. I may later today see if I can install NetBeui and bind & unbind.
Thanks

Woodie, On the computer 3 I logged out and then logged back under a different name. Then I logged out again and back on with the proper name. It still remains similar to the original post

I'm still not successful. I have installed NetBEUI on WinXP, Unbind TCP/IP from File and Printer sharing. How do I check if NetBEUI is the default protocol on WInXP?
Thanks
