How to add resolutions?

I have a monitor that displays 1680x1050. Some of my applications do not have widescreen support, so i would like to try 1400x1050. This would give me 1:1 pixel mapping, with black bars on both sides. The problem is that, this resolution is not selectable under display settings, and thus is not selectably by any of my games.

Is there any way in Catalyst Control Center to add this resolution, or do I have to use a 3rd party utility?

Thanks.

You mean 1440*990 ?

If a game has no widescreen support, there might be a mod. If it's an older game, chances are you are out of luck and will have to play at a different resolution.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're looking to accomplish, but doesn't "Enable GPU Scaling --> Centered Timings" do what you're describing?

Edit: Oh, it sounds like the app in question doesn't have that res to begin with.

I'm not asking how to add widescreen support.

I'm asking how to add custom resolutions to display settings. Thank you.

I have used powerstrip to do this - it doesn't always work, though, and is a lot of hassle.

I have a Viewsonic 20" 1400 x 1050 LCD monitor which was great for old 4:3 games it served me well, and I still use sometimes for old games. They no longer make the LCD, but it's great for games and work (sort of in-between the 19" 5:4 LCDs and the widescreen). My current Soyo LCD has built in 4:3 scaling, so I can game at 1600 x 1200 without scaling the screen, and that is useful.

One other thing - make sure you checked off "Hide Resolutions that this monitor does not support" option in the monitor properties (you probably already did this...).

Works fine for me. The only hassle is having to redo it all over again once you install a new driver.

I tried Powerstrip. Haven't figured how to add resolutions yet, still looking.

Is it me or is overclocking in Powerstrip broken? PS lets me overclock, but GPU-Z shows that the clocks are still at stock reguardless of setting in PS. I'm running a Sapphire Radeon HD4830.
