Is there an easy way to add applications to GNOME's Applications menu easily without creating a .desktop file? This is on Ubuntu 5.04.

The easiest thing I know to do is add a 'drawer' and stick the items you want in there.

right click on the panel, select 'add to panel', select 'Drawer'.

then left click on drawer to open it and right click on the bottom part of it to add items. Or open up the drawer and drag and drop the items you want into it.

The drawer is basicly like a entire new panel and you can add items to it and such.

It's not quite the same as adding a new entry to the applications menu, but it's close, I figure.

I'm not sure what GNOME version that is, or how the versions differ (but they do differ - there's been a lot of work on menu stuff over the last few versions). But basically, you should be able to create a launcher by right-clicking the desktop and choosing "New Laucher...". Fill in the path of the executable and pick an icon. Then you can probably drag that launcher into one of your application folders.

Or just create a desktop file. It's only a text file - open one with an editor and you'll figure out the format.

There is a bug in 2.8 that does not create menu entries correctly. I don't know what version you're running but what I do is open the menu then right-click inside it to add an entry.
