As someone mentioned, budget is definitely a concern, whether you say it is or you don't.
I thought about SAS but decided it would be far too expensive to get the amount of storage I wanted.
SATA II is quite fast, and good raid setups can be had without selling kidneys.
Do some research before you buy, else you could be spending over $2000-4000 for something that might still not satisfy you completely.
A few Raptors in raid-5 or raid-0 sound like it would work great for you. I have been impressed with the raid controller in my signature, and it is not rediculously expensive either.
Going with 15k rpm SAS hard drives is fun, but they are teeny tiny storage wise. IF you can live with that miniscule storage then it may be appropriate for you.
