How to access and configure my wireless router

I've come home to see that my families wireless network is completely unsecure. It's time for me to change that.

We've got a Linksys WRT55AG and it says in order to access the panel of configuration I just have to type in http://192.168.1.1. Well that's not working, and I have no idea how to access this thing so I can configure it.

Is there anyway I can just completely reset it and start over from scratch on the configuration. I think somebody from the ISP set it up for them and didn't secure it.

I have the same router.

If you cannot access the router configuration, just use a PEN or PENCIL to reset the router. You can do this by pressing the RESET button in the back of the router (smal hole)
Just keep it pressed for about 15-20 seconds and that should reset everything to default values.

Try to access the router again using the 192.168.1.1
Leave the user name blank and for password type: admin

(if you use the CD included with the router, it will do everything for you, including protected access through an automated guide.

Try it!

Right on! Same for most any wireless router. Setting up a secure system is on the CD and usually a step-by-step is in the quickie user's setup guide.

On some of the linksys routers, you have to hold down the button for a VERY long time to completely reset it... if nothing else works, hold it down for a full minute, that should definitely do it.

You're assuming the person that config it did not change the default gateway, if you can get an ip address, do a ipconfig /all find the default gateway... and enter that..

some people use 192.168.1.254 instead of 1.1

if they didn't have wifi security on.. most likely someone either log in and change the pwd, then change the port that you manage the router on.. so hard reset is needed

When you gain access to it use a pc that's not wirelessly connected when changing settings. (no relation to your question just a reminder)
