EDIT: On topic - my '96 Grand Am has pretty thick pillars. I haven't lost a car in there, but it does feel like driving a hatchback backwards sometimes.
 
'98 Dakota, and I wouldn't know where to begin counting how many times I've been in a near accident because I simply could not see a car out the side. I look, stretch my head to see around the pillar, look some more, advance into the intersection, and slam on the brakes! Seriously, cars on side streets when they enter a blind spot behind the pillar, it's about 50 yards they can travel the road before coming out from behind the other side of the pillar!

I'd say they're probably a good 5 inches in width.
