HOW THE HELL?!

Okay, I am trying to intall a NVSilencer5 Rev 3 on my eVGA 7800GT CO SE, and I am pretty sure I understand the installation process. My question is, how the hell do you get that freaking power connector off the board for the stock fan? The instructions say to use a needle to ease the barb out... I tried this, I am sorry but I don't have the dexterity of a nuerosurgeon. How did you guys do this?

So you don't have to worry about the barb thing? Wouldn't that break the connector though? It has this little "barb" thing holding it in, so I don't have to worry about that and can just pull it off?

Pull it out with your fingers, or use some needlenose pliers on the connector if need be. The only no-no I can think of here would be pulling directly on the wires.

One last question. My load temps in THRDRIBL have improved around 7-8C, but the idle temps are actually higher. This is a decent reduction, but from reading review I was expecting a bit more. Should temps improve once the paste around the core settles in? I was figuring this is probably what it is.

Make sure you have put enough paste on the card. I had the same problem you had, however it went away after I put more paste on the contact area.

Something i found out quick if not tight enough. In fact the temps shot way up. Your idle temps should drop at least between 7-10c in the 40ish and even more at loads (10-15c) in the 50-60c range. YMMV

I'm considering the evga 7800gt co too. when you replace the stock hsf with the nv silencer, does the copper heat sink have to come off too. if that's the case, it's kind of pointless to get to get the CO version if you plan to get aftermarket cooler right?

also, how loud is the stock fan? are you replacing it b/c of the noise or you just want better cooling? thanks

Yes the copper heatsink has to come off, and yes its pointless to get the CO if you replace the cooler. That is of course unless you can get the CO for less than the regular as was the case a few weeks ago.

IMO the stock fan on the CO isnt bad at all, the stock fan on the standard aluminum GT is high pitched and annoying as hell.
