How the hell do you convince someone that the world WON'T end in 2012? *EDIT*

2 days ago, someone I know mentioned the end of the world in 2012. Their only reason for believing so? "Why do the Mayan and Egyptian calendars end on the same day?" After about 20 minutes of explaining, I figured I got through to her.

Next day I get an email, "What do you think of this?" and a link to the doomsday clock. She honestly thought the clock accurately predicted the end of the world. I explained that it was maintained by a group of people and is just symbolic.

Finally, today they send me a link to this site: http://www.2012warning.com/ . She now says, "What do you think of this???"

What can I say at this point? Look at that site...it's fucking ridiculous. I seriously don't know what I can say to get the points across.

Bonus - She sees ghosts/spirits constantly, they haunt her house non-stop, and she says the gates of hell open at 3am (I need to ask which time zone and for how long...). She has 4 kids, and would like ~7 if money permitted, and says the kids can see the ghosts as well.

I just don't know what to say or do anymore...

*EDIT* - She seems to have agreed that the 2012 stuff is shaky at best, but she came back with "The bible talks of end of days which is scarier". What the fuck...I can't compete with that. I told her maybe it's time to pick a religion where there isn't a day where everyone dies.

I give up.

Make a 10K bet with her. If you make it past 2012, she owes you 10k.

Tell her to donate all her money to you.. she won't really be needing it then if the world is ending in 2 years.

Isn't it obvious at this point? There's nothing you can do to get through to her. If she's religious, you could mention that Biblically, there's no way anyone knows the exact time and day that the world will end...

Imagine the financial mess that (may) be created when the world does NOT end in 2012. People will stop paying their bills, charge their credit cards to the limit and having a good time. There will be some money pumped into the economy for that last quarter of 12 then when Q1 13 rolls around and there are so many defaults on unsecured credit. That doesn't sound good! 😱

Wouldn't it just be similar to the whole Y2K debacle? I remember reading stories of people stockpiling supplies and liquidating assets, but I don't remember any big economic fall out.

Granted, I hadn't even made it into high school at that point so my memories may be different from the reality.

So, a repeat of 2007-09?

The economic fallout has been happening for the last 5 years from that.

I made that up.

Number of times people have predicted the end of the world: Many many thousands.

Number of times it has actually ended: 0

...not that this really fazes any of the morons out there.

Could be or not.

This is unlike Y2K. People that were convinced it was going to be bad were convinced that we would be in the stone age. The dummies this time around are going to be convinced that everyone dies. There may be suicide parties.

Remember that question from school where your friends would ask what you would do if you had just 1 day to live? Remember how everyone's answer was killing spree, crime spree, stop using condoms, etc?

If I really really thought the world was ending and I had HIV or something, I would probably just spread that around since it doesn't matter anymore 😉
