<< The problem was that the U.S. only had two working nukes at that time. The U.S. did not want to risk the chance of dropping a dud over a uninhabitated island somewhere in Japan and have the Japanese military laughing their (_|_)'s. Furthermore, bear in mind that, the Japanese refused to surrender after seeing the effects of the first atomic bomb. >>

Correct me If I am wrong, but I beleive the US had 5 bombs, and 5 targets. Tokyo was next if they didn't surrender, along with 2 more after that. Again, correct me if I am wrong.

<< How the hell would we do something like that? Aren't we supposed to be the good guys? The terrorists kill 3000 people in our financial district and we call them animals. What about us? We killed over 100,000 civillians in Japan. >>

And why are you speaking with a "we" and "us"? When did Ontario become part of the United States of America?

Go back to stealing satellite signals, drinking a Molson, and eating some back bacon.

<< Japan would have surrenderded if we dropped the bomb on an island where women and children didnt live, if we had said to all our enemies "Pleease direct your attention to this unihabited island, we would like to show you what will happen to you if you continue to fvck with us.... boom." >>

Oh yeah? But where's this island? You know there was no CNN back then, right?

On 9/11 what country were we at war with?

Personally I'm sick and tired of the history revionsists bring this up. The bombs were dropped, the war ended and more lives were saved vs. a land invasion.

End of story.

Ummm... You have to put it in the perspective of the 1940's. We were in a full blown declared war against an enemy who started their aggression by bombing our Navy to smithereens at Pearl Harbor. Add to that the fact that the bomb was brand new, so there wasn't the same kind of understanding about the aftereffects of a nuke that we have, today. In that context, it's at least understandable.

I think it is more important that we learned to think about not doing it, again, and so far, we haven't been forced to that kind of decision. OTOH, assholes like Osama and Sadam, are just itching to try their own science projects on us. :|

Here, are some quotes collected from this thread.....

"War is hell. The point is to kill the other guy. Keep that in mind "

"so we have to stop them by stopping them, by any mean nescessary"

"The bombing of Japan was an atrocity, but very well may have been a necessary one."

"No, I don't think so. They had to be hit where it hurt, thier own people and industry. "

Yet, I'm willing to bet that most, if not all of you, who said these things have trumpeted about those "Crazy" arabs and their inhuman beliefs and actions....guess what? You aren't any different....

What happened right after both of the bombs were dropped?

I'll answer that one for you since you seem to have a poor grasp of history.

The Japanese surrendered!

What has happened due to all of the terrorist bombings by the ""Crazy" arabs "?

It sure as hell hasn't brought peace to any region of the world now has it?

As an example of the Japanese mentality of the time you should refer to the battle for Okinawa

.......Japanese human losses were enormous: 107,539 soldiers killed and 23,764 sealed in caves or buried by the Japanese themselves; 10,755 captured or surrendered......

They were fighting to the death.

The japanese had it coming to them for all the pain and suffering they caused under the Japanese colonialism of East Asia.

Moral relativity rocks! The world isn't exactly black or white, but it's not all gray either. Comparing WWII to the arab hatred of America only serves to notify others that your opinion is otherwise worthless, thanks for the input.

That may be true, but it was not the reason for dropping the bombs. They were the most efficient, quickest and in the end saved more lives than any other method of ending the war.

<< completely agree. I am sick and tired of hearing this excuse. The bomb could have been dropped elsewhere to demonstrate it's power. And who cares what war crimes the Japanese government commited. Tell me where it says that innocent civillians deserve to die for their government's crimes. If you want to walk down that road, the US doesn't have a spotless record either. Do you think that OUR civillians deserved to die on 9/11 because of that? Or does your way of thinking only apply to the Japs?

You obviously do not know much about history. You are aware of the fact that the Japanese attacked us first, right? This has nothing to do with the power of the atomic bomb. I'm sick of you Revisionists, who really don't have a clue what they are talking about. Remember, a 2nd guesser is the first to have two guesses at the right answer. Try to talk to someone who was alive at the time and involved in the situation. Or, try reading a history book for that matter. Ending the war quickly would have saved the U.S. from a costly invasion. From the standpoint of not only monetary considerations, but most importantly, American/Japanese lives. The Japanese were willing to kill off their pilots in order to attack us. Do you really think they were going to give up anytime soon with that type of motivation? It was estimated that by invading Kyushu, there could have been 500,000 to 1,000,000 American deaths. That doesn't even figure in the Japanese deaths.

I bet you are one of those people who think he had to show the Russians what kind of power we had by dropping the A-bomb, right? Actually, you probably didn't think that far. Wait, you probably think that Truman dropped the bomb to make sure he was re-elected to the office again?

Get a clue, do some reading, go to history class....do something......9-11 has nothing to do with this and to compare it to dropping an A-bomb is utterly ridiculous.....

Perhaps because 66,000 lives weren't lost at once from a suicide bomb.

Okay Mr. Oversimplify - I am willing to be that you think we should go over to the Middle East and apologize for all of the perceived sins we have committed and then let theie leaders sodomize us...

You are a the weakest high horse rider I have ever seen. FYI - yours is a hobby horse.

I don't really doubt the reasonings the first bomb was dropped. IMO, it was probably the best thing to do to quickly end the war. But what about the second? I read somewhere that the Japanese didn't fully understand the destruction of the first bomb, and basically had one more day passed, they would have surrendered... is there any truth in this?

All is fair in love and war.
And ya gotta love the Japanese attitude at that time.

Yeah I think it saved lives, and I challenge you to prove it didn't. If you want to make accusations, the burden of proof is on you!

well then, do you think that it would be a better idea for the US force at that time to try and invade mainland Japan?

If so, the lives lost would be greater than millions, on each side ....

Pardon my ignorance but war is war... Don't get into it unless you're ready to face the consequences. I think you should go back to playing warcraft III, maybe then you'll learn something ;)

Edit: BTW about the innocent children in Japan etc. They were being trained to slaughter, particularly Chinese people at the age of 10 or even younger. They were being trained in public schools to do this. So are they still as innocent as you claim them to be? I'm aware it doesn't apply to ALL of them but of course you can clearly see this as a government action :p Source: Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang.

You do know that Japan attacked us because we cut off all supplies to their country right?
