How the hell can manufacturers sell a car without A/C? **Update** The real answer makes itself known ;)

I was pricing a Mazda 3i on Edmunds.com and noticed that A/C is optional (no A/C on a $13,000 car is :|). Maybe this would be of less concern up in Canada or some other igloo place, but how the hell could you live without A/C in the States...especially in the summer time?

It just seems like one of those things that should just be STANDARD no matter what. At least IMHO, all vehicles sold in the states should at LEAST come standard with:

A/C
Power Windows/Locks
FM/Cassette/CD, whatever...as long as you have some tunes;)

**Update**

See Quixfire's post as to why some cars don't come with A/C

Well the Honda DX cars don't come with A/C, Power windows/locks, and power side mirrors.

If I lived someplace like Minnesota or Maine or Northern California, etc. I'd consider not getting A/C to save the $$

It's only like $400 - $600 at the most. Stop being a cheapass ;)

Doesn't AC help with defogging windows too?

If you live somewhere with a temperate climate, you don't need A/C. I lived in Santa Cruz, CA for the first 20 years of my life, and never once required A/C. Our house didn't have it, and none of our cars had it until 1999. In the summer, high temps are usually around 76-78.

Not everyone has to have power windows though either, but I think most would prefer it over cranking them (I hated leaning over to crank down/up the window in my old Sunbird).

In an arid climate, doesn't matter much :)

And the first car I had, 1973 Dodge Dart Swinger had no A/C and only an AM radio (not even 8-track) and I got by fine. Sure, there were maybe two or three times over the year I drove it I had to keep a rag handy for wiping the inside of the windshield but cars these days are a bit better. Besides, just blast the heat a bit or crack a couple of windows and get some airflow and it helps to defog.

So you NEVER traveled? Never went to a place where it'd be nice to have A/C. Never went south? Never went on vacation during the summer?

I'm from San Diego and it gets to be over 100 at least a few times a year. I never use AC and I'd rather not spend the $300 to have it standard.
My teacher doesn't like power windows and prefer's the handle.
My boss thinks Cassesttes are stupid and shouldn't be in cars.

Not everyone is like you.

So you want to add about $2000 for everyone, great. I know tonnes of people who immdiatly put after market systems in thier cars. Others like contractors don't like a/c or power windows and locks... more crap to break worse gas mileage. then if you live in a place like coastal where the temps never raise above 85 it's a total waste.. Growing up in costa mesa I never used AC..then in the military in Pensacola I never needed it.. then in san luis obispo ca I never used it.. Plus windoes down and fresh air is nice..

I removed the AC from almost all my vehicles.

Power locks are a convenience. Not neccessary.
Power windows are becoming more and more neccessary, but it's a real PITA when the motors burn out and a cop tries to talk to you, or you try paying a toll. Had that happen in the Vandura. Teh not kewl.

A radio of some sort should be standard - removable media play isn't neccessary. Of course, there should be a delete option for commercial refitting or industrial use.

Would you pay for a $600 accessory to your car that you would use maybe 3-4 days a year? We didn't.

That's what airplanes and rental cars are for! :)

It's not a thing about everyone being like me. Once you get to a certain price point, YOU DO get ALL of those features standard (usually $20,000) on just about ANY vehicle.

Maybe it's just something that I've taken for granted over the years.

AC means extra heat under the hood, extra weight, extra mechanical complication, extra repair costs. Besides, I like the heat :)
Power windows are convenient, until the switches go bad, and the regulators strip. Then they're an expensive hassle :|
