How the hell can I view a file whose name starts with a '-' on a unix machine?

What shell are you using.
What kind of file is it.

Usually the - is the beginning of a parameter.
For example kill -9 meaning "NOW" 😛

Or, as I like to call it, "terminate with extreme prejudice". 😀

😀 hahaha.

That is a bit extreme, my terminate with extreme prejudice is "rm -rf /"
