How the heck to use spdif in coming from tivo

I am trying to connect an optical cable from my Tivo, Hughes hdvr2, to the front panel SPDIF in on an Ice Cube VL67.

I have a four speaker set up and have connected the optical cable but I get no audio. When I go to the SPDIF control tab and select, "real time spdif" it screws up the audio going to the speakers by blending the output to all speakers. I have played with the record settings but still get zip/no audio at all from the tivo to the computer output.

I am a total noob with the optical cable crap so please forgive my ignorance, it is my girlfriends machine and I'd like to have it done for her for christmas.

Please help my ignorant soul. 🙂

btw..when I go to the audio playback and record options I have selected SPDIF but it doesn't allow me to slide the volume thing. It is greyed out.

according to this there's only one spdif connection... which means it's probably meant as an output to a receiver, not an input for a tivo or dvd player.

Doh! I finally figured it out.....(it has a spdif-in on the front and a spdif out on the back) I was using an optical cable with a coupler to another cable. I removed the coupler and the extra legnth and it works fine now. Thanks 🙂

It's still greyed out but it works. My understanding, after many headaches over it, is that since it is a predetermined input from the tivo there is no level adjustment, thus iit is greyed out. I still wonder why there would even be a slider though.
