i think Columbia and NYU will have subsudized apartments for students with a low rent. Not sure if it's for grad students though

only if you get Columbia housing and its not guaranteed for grad students, so its possible that you'd have to find your own apartment

1200 budget to share a room in a 1 bedroom studio is completely doable. I personally suggest looking up campus listings at NYU, or walk around on campus- you'll definitely find a home made flyer of available apartments or people looking for roommates :)

worst I've seen is a story in the village voice of 3 guys sharing a 300 square foot studio and the $2100 rent

I live up by kerrytown...studios around here are 600 - 850/mo. The plus is being close to angelo's...

/munches leftover angelo's rasin toast.

Well the good news for you then is the area around Columbia is significantly cheaper because it is above 96th street. (the college area there basically is a buffer between the upper west side & Harlem).

Stay away from Harlem, man.

If you want to live in or near harlem, you've obviously never been there.

Oh come on, it's not THAT bad...I have a friend who's renting an apartment there.

Pretty much. Except some of the larger buildings have signs out front when there are apts. available, and you can walk in and ask the doorman to see them without going through a broker. Generally they are even more pricey.

Found my new place. 450 sq ft 22nd floor luxury apt. at the tip of the island for effectively $1645 including gym. My jaw must have hit the floor.

I have some friends renting-out a walkup in Washington Heights. Not below Harlem but a great up-and-coming neighborhood (I live there, duh). I could also hook you up with some decent brokers from my last apt search.

Good luck finding what you really want. When you fail. come crawling back to those of us living in the real world, we can help. :D

Edit: Clarification.

It's true. 2.5 years ago I had a pretty sizeable two-rooms "studio" through CU for < $1000.

Edit: For someone studying a mathy subject, I sure get ">" and "<" mixed-up a lot.
