How the heck do you find an apt in NYC?

Christ, my roommate has driven my up the wall, and if I don't get out, it's going to turn real nasty...

I want to find a place for Jan 1, for under 1200. Anything a guy can do to get a studio or 1 bed south of Harlem? (I'm on craigslist, it freakin annoying with those ads).

You pretty much can't. If there are no broker fees, then there are extraneous deposits and security fees from the landlords themselves. Good luck finding a place for 1200. You'll need it.

i am in the EXACT same situation with the same budget. good luck brotha. those brokas are shaaddyyy.

 

i once went to queensboro plaza by mistake. and I took the 7 back in

at 10.

that was shady....

Deposit I would be alright with, provided I can get it back from the landlord
 
1200 in Manhattan is pretty tough as it is, especially without a broker. Craigslist is your best bet, but you'll have to do a lot of hunting. It's easier if you live near the city already and can visit often. My GF and I moved in from out of town, so we went the broker route. As others have suggested, there are other places you can live that are less expensive than Manhattan. Riverdale in the Bronx and Astoria in Queens are two examples off the top of my head. You can also try across the river in Hoboken or other nearby Jersey cities.

why dun u guys move into my apartment? i got one for rent....its huge...both of u guys in this thread...its in a great area down in rector place by wall street and a rock's throw from the hudson river and battery park...the build allows pet too and the doormen are real friendly....but if you guy don't pay ur rent and cause trouble i'm going to have to break both your kneecaps 😀
 
move to queens and buy something

all the manhattan refugees are moving into the forest hills area and driving up prices like mad. you can still find some good deals in the area though. buy a place and ride the equity up. i bought my 1 bedroom last year for $132,000. My mortgage and maintenance is $1250 including all utilities. I owe $112000 on it. I can sell it for $165,000 ot more right now.

renting is for suckers
 
i got a studio last year on 102nd for $1225. it was nice, but then i moved in with this unsightly FVCKFACE of a roommate and i can't stand her, but i am getting married anyway and moving to the bronx where it's cheaper, so that is what i look forward to now.
 
with no broker, your best bet is to pick up a couple local papers as soon as they hit the newsstands in the morning and start making phone calls asap.

I'd recomend Village Voice, Daily News, and NY Post. I found my old apartment in NYC through an ad in the Daily News.

my co-worker is looking for a roomate. i think he lives in queens but the rent is not gonna be that expensive. he's 40-years old and going to school... and i guess he sleeps early.

so if you are quiet and is interested, let me know.

yap the fam moved out of the upper west side years ago....been enjoying our forest hills house for 10+ years now...but i do miss the city alot tho
 
Ya, forest hills rocks. 🙂 Was the only place we even looked for apts...a block away from the boulevard of death...
