If you have your new mattress delivered, often they will take the old one for free when they leave.

If not, try Craigslist if your mattress isn't too gross.

Call your local government and ask them... they may have a place you can take it to.

A local dump will take it for a piece of your @ss. I mean, for a small fee measured by cubic feet of disposed material.

Good way to find out if a mattress is really made of fire-retardant material! I second this option!

Tie it to the roof of your car and take it to the town dump. I've done it before, you don't even need help. A mattress is bulky, not heavy.

Does your city not have "heavy trash pickup"?

If not, just toss it in a dumpster or alley. One of those discount mattress places will pick it up & recover the exterior, then pass it off as "new".

If it's something I can take to my county dump, it's about $4. If I have to take it to the next county, it's $8 (for a van or regular pickup load).

If you live in a house, in L.A. you can call the City for a "large Item pickup". You have to tell them exactly what is being left for pick up. On your next trash day, leave it out and they will pick it up. It costs nothing, but you can only do it a few times a year.
