err...it's difficult. i've read a couple of threads about chiping the core taking V2 off.

Your best bet would be using the screwdriver, and be very careful in using force.

Maybe even two screwdrivers, the main one used to put a little down pressure on the clip, I would cover the end with a piece of tape to minimize damage if you slip off the clip. And another much smaller one to push the clip outward from behind it. Don't apply too much pressure down, always a risk of chipping your core. Warning doing this too many times has the risk of rounding your lugs and then clips slide off from vibration.

well i took my mobo out and just took it off but while i was doing it, my screwdriver slipped and it hit the mobo but it hit at like a blank space, is that ok? and can i mess around with overclocking even with just a cpu? and a video card?

I bet you Compuwiz1 could tell you the best least risky way, maybe you could try PMing him. He is real good at getting back with people.

You can just try the FSB to overclock without unlocking it, but you will have more success eeking out that last drop of overclock if you were unlocked.

As long as the screwdriver didn't scratch the lans under the coating and break them you are ok.

and whats the least amount of stuff i need to run my computer just to mess around with the cpu?

RAM, CPU/HSF, and Vidcard. U don't even need HD to post. ;)

But it's good to have HD, and floppy in, as chances are things are okay.

If you didn't scratch the little circuits then it shoudl be fine. I hope someone design a good SOCKET that works with a "standardized HSF spec"!!!

Yeah, you should be fine as long as you don't see any damage, that enamel on top of the mobo is pretty tough stuff.

You need your power supply:D, mobo, cpu, memory and video card. But you will not know if its a stable overclock until you get into whatever version of windows or linux or whatever OS you will load. Some OS's are ok with overclocking and other are kinda picky. But at least you can check what you will post at. P.S. You probably know this but, I always load my system at default everything then overclock. That way I won't have to re reload because of my overclock.

...........edit...........
OH yeah don't forget that Heatsink.........

I can't get the heatsink off either! I had a real tough time putting it on too... it was a very tight fit, so now I can't get it out. I've tried the sugggestions here, and I've even put a lot of pressure down (I know, my bad, but nothing seems to work). Anything else I can try?

I dont know what you guys are talking about, I can get mine off with no problem. Here's the trick. Put a flat head screwdriver in the little tab that is on the right most side of the clip. Then all you have to do is apply some force downward (to release the clip from the socket), then pry the end of the clip outward using the screw driver and lift it up. Its really not hard at all. Just be REALLY carefull not to let the screwdriver slip and hit your motherboard because it could damage some circuit lines. Good luck.

To put mine on I used the end of a socket driver. They are rounded so it holds the little clip better and decreases the chances of it slipping. Haven't tried taking it off yet but putting it on was a breeze.

After reading all the problems people have been having putting on and taking off the Volcano II, I was pretty nervous about trying it a couple days ago (first system I ever built myself), but it wasn't nearly as bad as it'd been made out to be. Used a screwdriver, applied a very moderate amount of force, and it went on easily. Taking it off was slightly more complicated, but still nothing too bad. Just use a screwdriver, apply some downward force, and pull it out.

Socket driver

This is the BEST tool. It won't slip off like a screwdriver might. I would be worried if I were just using a screwdriver, but I can get my V2 on and off in a snap with a socket driver. I picked up a set at a local hardware store for $1.49US. I wouldn't use them to work on my car, but they're fine for my PC.

Hrm. I guess I wasn't the only one nervous as I build a new system with a Volcano 2. Seemed a letdown, actually. I had picked up a shim, but once I got to the point of putting the HSF on, it did not, at all, seem necessary.

I still think they should improve the socket so a standard way of putting HSF on maybe devised. Why not just screw the HSF on or something. sheesh.
