How sturdy are those keychain USB memory keys?

I have a 128mb USB key. It's on my keychain. it rattles around in my pocket, as well as on the steering column of my car since my car keys are on the keychain as well.

just wondering how much punishment can these things take?

mine's been dropped, kicked, drop-kicked, thrown, heated, cooled, "unsafely" unplugged, and knackered and it still works. good stuff :)

supposedly you can put them on the ground and jump up and down on them and they are fine.

tough little devices. We bought 6 at my last job and they took a real beating.

some are more durable than others. my friend's soyo cig@r got the usb plug broken off pretty quickly. I have an apacer one that I got from newegg and it just stopped working 2 weeks after I bought it. so I sent it back to newegg and got an RMA. then I unloaded my washed and dried clothes one day and found my new RMA'd stick in my shorts pocket. I wonder if that's what happened to the first one....anyway the new one still works even after being washed and dried.

my friend's dad works for a university in anotmology and he has access to some sort of clear liquid plastic stuff that hardens when exposed to air, so we were thinking of taking the cases off our usb sticks and dipping them in the plastic with a mold. that way they would be protected against plug breakage and water

I've got two of them and I haven't been able to break either one and I'm pretty good at damaging things.

I expect there's no meaningful differentiation between brands. The EEPROM is an off the shelf part. The USB interface is an off the shelf part. The circuit board connecting the two is a no brainer. Put it in a pretty case and sell it.

I can't imagine that any brand is "better" than any other brand, unless some supremely cheap company is using borderline parts.

just get one for your convenience, mine is so small it only takes up the width/height of 1 usb slot, so it doesnt interfere w/ the other one

Those things are pretty cool, but I honestly can't think of anything I'd need to put on one.
