How stable should an Abit KT7A-Raid be???

Right now my anwser would be not at all!! This thing is so unbeleivabley unstalbe I can't stand it. Q3 timedemos lock after 5minutes-hour and IE crashes after about a half an hour. I don't get this at all. I have settings at defualt fail safe. I've tried performance settings too and it was about the same results. I've even tried upping/lowering the voltage on the proc. The proc is a tbird 1.1ghz garaunteed @ 1.2ghz that I'm running anywhere between 1.0-1.266ghz. Wherever I get it stable! 🙂 The cooler is a taisol heatsink with a 27cfm ys tech fan. I have a 38cfm delta that I might put back on, but I don't think that it is heat cuz bios reports around 36c. System specs:

Abit KT7A-Raid
Tbird 1.1ghz
256megs Micron Pc133
Radeon 64meg ViVo (not overclocked yet)
IBM 45gig 75GXP

I don't know what it could be! I am going to try installing Win2k on my free space I left aside for dual booting and maybe Win2k will run better and its just something I have done with Win98SE. this is is fresh install of Win98SE btw.

Where are your cards plugged in at? If you are using your raid controller try and leave pci#5 empty. If you are using a SBLive try it in pci#4, if you are using your USB then try the SBLive in PCI#3. Do you have an ISA modem, or pci? Do you have a NIC card? Where is it at?

4 in 1 drivers, 4 in 1 drivers, 4 in 1 drivers, 4 in 1 drivers, 4 in 1 drivers, 4 in 1 drivers.
Do you have them installed? Were they installed EARLY in the OS?

After trying to repartition my Win2K drive for a dual boot setup, I gave up and have decided to go for a whole new rebuild. I want to get the newest 4in1 drivers for my KT7A, but I'm not sure where to get them and which ones are newest. Can you tell you me where to get these drivers?

My Radeon is in the AGP (obviously) 🙂 Then I have a nic in slot 2. And my AWE64 in the isa slot. I have the Raid disabled. The via 4in1s are installed but I don't know how well. O'well I'm in Win2k at the moment and am going to try and get this working!! 🙂 Thanx guys.

Whooo Win2k is helping ALOT. been going for about 2 hours and not a single crash. Q3 and IE work fine 🙂 thats all that i have tested so far though.

Cheers

Frost, for future reference, its always best to start a new mobo with a minimal hardware config. No NICS, Sound, RAID. Just the VIDEO, HDD, RAM and CD-ROM. When you get this config stable. spend some time understanding your system configuration. Understanding your IRQ's and slot lay-outs. Some devices will share IRQs without a hiccup, others crash the system hard. As you add devices, make sure you understand what resources they need. If you follow this process, which includes resources for mobo controllers as well, you will almost certainly have a stable system or, you will know exactly which piece causes the instability.

when you say slot 2, do you mean PCI 1 or PCI 2? If it's PCI1, you may want to move it to PCI2. AGP and PCI 1 shares IRQ. Glad to hear it's running good now

Yep, DaddyG is right.

You have to be very careful where you stick your PCI cards.
I have seen many problems caused because of IRQ conflicts, even when the drivers were not installed.
Sometimes it is very difficult to spot the conflict because Windows might make a few changes after you boot.

I recommend that you look though the BIOS manual carefully.
It has plenty of stuff about the PCI slot allocation.

I think that KT7 does allow you to manually select the IRQ for the slot within the BIOS.

Also, here's a dumb question : Was this an upgrade? I mean, did you have a previous version of windows that you were trying to run this with? Not wiping windows on system change can cause the kind of problems you were having all the time.

Nope fresh install dual boot of Win98SE/Win2k. When I said slot 2 I meant PCI slot 2, Pci slot1 is covered by my Radeon cooler 🙂
