How soon is too soon to look for a promotion?

I work at a help desk... I'm near the bottom of the totem pole in an entry level position (there are other techs who started after me and I've trained some of them). I started in July and my first formal review is scheduled for February, the end of our fiscal year. Seems to be that people in my position are being promoted after a year, however, I do as much or more than they do and I've been at the company half as long and been doing things to get noticed by management. So I'm curious... is 6-8 months too soon to look for a promotion if I'm doing tasks that a position above me normally does? Apparently we have a pretty high turnover rate in this department so I'm hoping that also means I could be promoted without a whole lot of time put in if I show that I'm capable. Opinions?

/me grabs a chair.

Op, a high turnover rate could also mean they don't hand out promotions very easily and people have to get promoted by job hopping. Is then an open position above you? If so go for it but be sure to detail exactly what you have added to the company in concrete terms, nothing vague.

Anyway, Jeff, what we would like to do is put you into a position where you would have as many as four people working right underneath you.

This is a big promotion, Jeff.

Huge.

You are too competent. You have performed your job so well that management feels you must stay at the help desk. Forever. Muhahahahahaha!

Haha... battling with a moderator... don't think that's much of a battle.

Anyway... there's plenty of open positions... however, they don't necessarily HAVE to be filled. Basically, at the help desk we have temps, associate support techs (me), support techs, and advanced support techs. Four people just got promoted from associate support tech to support tech. One of them is temporarily taking an advanced support tech position because we just had one quit. Since I started, 3 support techs and now 2 advanced support techs have left the company.
