How soon before we start seeing imitation led lights?

Does it really matter what type of light it is?

I hope it doesn't. We've seen argument like FWD vs RWD or automatic vs manual transmission and there's always real stuff to be said. If we start arguing LED vs fluorescent/incandescent lights, then that's just sad. Maybe we'll argue about which one has a cleaner light spectrum then argue over the definition of clean.

What exactly do you mean by "imitation LED lights"?
They look like LEDs but they're really just your standard lights.

Some retards do that with fake HID headlights. Instead of getting actual blue colored lights, they buy these cheap chinese knockoff lights are just normal white light with a blue color filter on them.

I think he means adding that style of LED lighting to cars that do not come with such lighting. I don't think he means using fluorescent in place of LEDs. LEDs are so cheap, it's not like they'd benefit from not using it.

But the OP is behind. They've been available on the aftermarket scene for a long time now.

LED lighting is only going to be more common as the technology becomes cheaper. Even after market replacement lights will eventually move that way.

Well that doesn't sound so bad. Makes it easier for police to know who to hassle and strip search. Guy with underglow and spinning rims = carrying drugs (probably).

All of the literature and the website say they are LEDs and tout their low power consumption, so I think they are real LEDs.

Real HIDs are not "actual blue colored lights", they are vapor arc lamps that lack a filament and generate light with a continuous electric arc like a lcd/dlp projector bulb. 99% of so called HID lights out there, even some of the "real" ones that come with ballasts, are just fake blue halogens. If there isn't an arc, it's not HID by definition.

Don't need fake LEDs. LEDs are so cheap that any after market ricer or pimpin headlamp fixtures and altezza tails you can buy for $50 on E bay will be packed full of them. Type in "angel" "hid" "led" on Ebay motors and prepare to vomit.

The market for parts for people to pretend they have something they don't has been around alot longer than LEDs on Audis.

It's fun to watch the ricers with real HIDs. Then a week later, their headlights melt and/or shatter. Fun stuff.

edit: to OP, Kia's come with daytime running LEDs. Ricers have been doing the LEDs for years.

What is the difference between HID arcing and regular fluorescent light bulb arcing?

Look like LED's??? Standard fluorescent bulbs look nothing like LED's and not even the same thing as HID's.

HID doesn't use a phosphor to generate visible light and produces a much brighter and cleaner purer white light directly from the arc itself (hence use in video projectors).

The ironic thing is that real arc bulbs are prized for their intense pure sun like white light, its just that some ricers saw oncoming HIDS off axis where it looks blue for the same reason the sky is predominantly blue in the daytime (wavelength refraction/scattering), associated it with the whole BMW/Benz prestige image and thought it looked baller, so now here we are with everybody wanting blue headlights to be cool. It goes with the sun roofs and convertible tops that are never opened, but are there to enumerate when someone asks about your car.

Most who install them or option them couldn't care less about their own headlight performance or visibility. They get them so they can look cool and stick out to other cars and to let other people know they have a new car. Basically the same reason they put on underglows and have blue leds in the washer nozzles and anywhere else they can cram them. Its a fashion statement that serves the same purpose as peacock feathers
