How small is 500sq ft for an apartment?

Think of it like this:

It's a room 25 feet by 20 feet.

A king size bed, at 7x7 would take up nearly 1/10th the available floor space.

Depending on how much stuff (junk) you have, it could be liveable but imagine EVERYTHING crammed into that little of an area.

I wouldn't settle for anything less than 740 sq ft.

I'm in a 760 sq ft apt and its small.

its hard for me to picture how small it would be since the 500ft would include a bathroom and kitchen. hmm,, sounds kinda small.

very livable. Myself and mrs. skoorb shared a place that was no bigger than that for 1.5 years. It was a bachelor apartment. I can't believe we didn't kill each other but it worked out decently!

I have lived in three different apartments that were between 450 sq. ft. and 600 sq. ft. One of them had two rooms with a bathroom and no kitchen. There was a fridge. Made due with a hotplate, microwave and toaster oven on a table. Each room was 15x15. Was small, but livable. Stored some personal items outside the apartment. My GF at the time would stay for a week or two with me on occasion. It was OK, but not great.

Also lived in half of a 1 bedroom duplex that had a kitchen and bath. Both the living room and bedroom were about 18x18 with closet space. Again, I was forced to store personal items outside the apartment. Had a roommate who split the rent with me - $125 mo. each. He stayed there during the week, slept in the livingroom and drove home on weekends.

I was dating a girl who bought a 560 sq ft house (~$120k :Q ). Then she walked into my bedroom and said, "Damn, your bedroom + bathroom is bigger than my house!!"

Take a close look a shoebox, now multiply it by 2. It is livable, but forget about being a packrat.

You should try living on a boat if you think that is bad. (The tranquility far outweighs the advantages though!)

If you want a clue to what liveaboard life is like, you can simulate! Try doing this to get an idea:

Move everything into your smallest bedroom.

Use plywood to block off everything in your bathroom except a 3' x 3' square over your toilet. Use the shower in the EIGHTH house down the street for bathing to simulate walking from your boat to the marina showers down the dock.

Use a laundromat to wash all your clothes. Park your car a minimum of 300' from the laundromat to simulate hauling the clothes and stuff up the dock. Do laundry at LONG odd intervals, only when you would be in a marina that HAS a laundry. Take a cab to a strange laundry across town to simulate stopping at a marina without one or with one that is broken.

Seal off your kitchen and cook all your meals on a camp stove in the little bedroom so you can experience sleeping in a boat where someone burned dinner.

Get a humidifier and run it wide open in the bedroom for practice in "mildew control".

Shut the breaker off to your water heater, air conditioner and any other electrical luxuries...leaving only one 20A circuit energized.

Use more plywood to block off 3/4 of the closet so you can practice storing stuff in lockers. Cut off your TV cable and watch TV on rabbit ears.

Use a car stereo instead of your big home entertainment system. Park your car at the same house you take showers (8 houses away).

Put in a Change-of-Address card and have all your mail sent to a friend's house 20 miles away.

Rebuild your toilet once a month taking apart all the plumbing and putting it back together.

Every time you do anything electrical, leave your lawn mower running outside your bedroom window for "The Generator Effect".

Take the screens off your windows and leave them open so every fly, mosquito and gnat in the yard has easy access to your "cabin".

Use a boat battery to power all your "stuff" through an inverter. Charge it only once a week to simulate being in a marina.

Give that 8th neighbor $7/foot every 30 days.

When you fill up your car, say with $15 in gas, give the 8th neighbor an extra $15 to simulate marina gas prices.

Don't go to WalMart. Buy all your supplies at the most expensive 7-11 you can find. If you MUST go to any other store, use public transportation or call a cab...livaboards don't have cars on their boats.

Paint your house, or pay the most expensive painting company in town to paint your house, every year. Use the most expensive paint you can find. Paint the bottom floor twice to simulate putting anti-fouling paint on a hull.

Take your car to the most expensive dealership in town. Have him overhaul the engine and do whatever he wants to it every year. Make believe he is the ONLY place this can be done within 100 miles. Be nice and smile at him.

Did I say it's still worth it???

hehe

And people complain about having "only" 500 ft^2 or their king sized bed takes up 10% of that! 😛

Cheers!

lol! are you serious??? t\

I just broke out the tape measure, and that's about what I've got. I just signed my third year lease (I've been here almost two full years). You'll fill it up quickly if you're not careful, but it's a fair size for one person if the price and location are right.

What will fit: A regular full size bed, and couple dressers and night stands. One regular couch, or a love seat and a chair. A small/narrow entertainment center. A small computer desk in a corner. A small kitchen table with folding leafs. A microwave stand. A bookcase or two.

What won?t fit: A king sized bed. Full living room set. Big screen TV and full entertainment ?wall.? Huge office sized ?L? workstation. 150 gallon aquarium. Mini bar. You get the idea.

How small is 500 sq ft? I could never live there...not anymore than a few weeks. 800 sq ft is generally the minimum for consideration and 1000+ sq ft is preferred.

I've been looking at real estate and even though I am single, I ignore any property with less than 1200 sq ft. I have accumulated too many possessions over the years to squeeze them into anything less accommodating. 😱
