how slow is dial up?

i get 114 kbps with my Verizon Cell Phone for my modem. that's now slow land line dial up is, it is only about 1/3 to 1/4 as fast as my fvcking cell phone can give me.

I'm house shopping. Maybe I should tell the wife that my eye runs to listing that says, "CBL AVL" before I look at anything else.

I'm connected at 46.6k. It sucks.

YES.
Our current house was pre-approved for DSL -- after we bought it and went to order, they told us we were 1/2mi too far away. :|

weird. i was told for months that DSL wasn't available here. even on the day i ordered it, the web site said dsl wasn't available. i went and added some services from verizon via the web site and one of the options was dsl, i went ahead and checked it and wouldn't you know it, by the end of the month, i had DSL.

their so called "tests" aren't very accurate.

not that slow for normal websurfing. But games and dling is a NO!

Wrong...too slow for web surfing. I can't believ its still offered.

It's all I can get out here. Not everybody lives in the city. I usually download at about 3~3.5K

my parents live in the country, and they have DSL......

I had dialup recently. I became so frustrated, I set up a cacheing proxy server which made it tolerable for websurfing.

oh my god, so slow. it's ok for text-based email. AT forums are excruciating but still usable. anything tougher and you're better playing tic-tac-toe with a stick in the dirt outside.

Usually 56kbps, but I can't even stand normal web surfing with it anymore.

FCC regulations limit the maximum speed for dial up to 53K. I am using dial up now and the speed is around 50 to 52K. I will get cable/DSL within a month or so with the new house.

Slower than you think - so slow that you could take a cat nap in between some web page loads <snore>
My average connection speed is 40-45K
it took almost 2 hours to download a 25MB file
and plus, every time someone calls or picks up the phone somewhere else in the house it makes the connection hiccup and sometimes kick you off, real annoying
stay away from it if at all possible! I can't get anything else so I'm stuck with it

My cable modem is too slow for me, 4 Mbps Down and 384 Kbps Up is crap. Its only worse now that I have 2 roommates who use it as much as I do. It might be OK for one person, but not 3. I want FiOS with 15-20 Mbps and I want it now. What can I say, I was spoiled by 10 Mbps symmetric DSDN and then sold the network, and those who baught it got rid it. I can barely tollerate this comcast crap, much less go back to Dial-up. Verizon, please come to Denver with FiOS. I will bow down to the FiOS god, sacrifice a virgin, whatever your god wishes.

limit the upload with netlimiter. i have 384 ul split between 3 people and as long as everyone is capped at 8-10kbs it's fine with everyone playing.

If you've tasted broadband, even if it's 384K DSL, dial-up is painfully slow.

Yep. Back when I was on dialup, it didn't seem that bad. Now that I've tasted cable, 56k is unbearable. Especially since tons of graphics and inbedded flash and sh|t like that has become the norm for most web pages.

Tell those fvckers to put it up anyway or you'll punch them in the neck.

I did it in August of last year. 6 hours.
Windows ships it out for free - free CD and free shipping. Otherwise on dial-up, I'd still be on SP1.

I am on dial up also. Never had DSL or Cable before. I connect at 50.6 kbps which I guess is pretty decent for dial up standards. For my dial - up brothers who can't get broadband but still play first person shooters online, I recommend the Diamond Supra Max serial external v92 modem. It sells for about 40 dollars.

In MS-Dos the lowest ping i ever got was 93ms. In games like CS:S it goes up to about 190ms.

May the pain of slow internet strengthen your soul. lol

Save the money spent on the ricer for a fatter pipe then 🙂

I too suffer sleepless nights when such ideas come to mind. 1500k/sec is your friend 😀
