Hi all,

I've decided to reformat my drives in hope of saving more space. Currently, i have only 2 drives. My HDD is 40 GB Maxtor Diamond 60+. I want to make many partitions as possible to save more spaces. Is it a good idea??? I intend to install win XP professional as O/S after reformatting. So how would u suggest about the number of drives and allocation for each of the drive?

Thank you all in advance.

Could you be clearer about how you think more partitions will save you space?

It's just that i heard from one of my friends. He told me like I could save more spaces on my hardisk by dividing it into more drives. He told me about this with some calculations and there's also a thing about "clusters" in his words too. I don't really remember. Thanks anyway.

Well, for a drive of that size, the slack would be more then if partitioned it to a 10GB. When you say you have two drives do you mean two partitions (20GB/20GB), or do you mean two 40GB drives? Let me asked you this, will you even miss the lost space, or do you need every MB you can squander?

I used to be one of those people who would chop up my drives, but found out later that I was actually wasting a lot of time, and space.

Sorry. What I meant back then is my PC has 2 drives ( C & D) with 20 GB each. I am now thinking about partitioning it into four 10 GB drives, or can I divide some more???

I mean it has 2 partitions ( 20 GB/ 20 GB ) each. Oh, my friend also told me like my PC might run faster if I divide it into more partitions. Is it true???

Personally when I partition my drives I like to divide them into what I use the computer for the most EX: My 20gig is divided into 4 partitions (C)(system files only), (D)(Games Only),(E)(Applications Only),(F)(Downloaded Files/Backup Only). It just all depends on what you do. Keeping it partitioned will also help keep your SYS dir clean when you only install the OS and needed files there you wont have uninstalled things all over the place(most of the time) plus it just keeps everything more organized. I spit mine into even partitions 5/5/5/5.
