Actually, it is a motherboard that is being sent to me. But I am to provide my friend with the packaging materials and I do not know how I should go about this as I have never seen a motherboard packaged before.

The package has a long ways to go, so I want to ensure its safety. Can anybody give me any tips on this one?

Double box it. Have your friend use the original box, or one that will hold the motherboard and put some foam peanuts or newspaper to cover the slack. Then use one of the standard FedEx or USPS boxes and do the same. The sides should allow for you to stuff peanuts on all sides. I've got tons of peanuts from my various orders as well as a few old boxes; I believe USPS also delivers free packing supplies via their website, but you may want to double-check.

Are the dimensions of a motherboard universal? i.e., if I were to ask you the dimensions of your motherboard, would that necessarily be the same as mine?

No, it depends on the form factor of the board. ATX is pretty universal in that they vary by 1/2 an inch , but between form factors the dimensions are quite different.

Make sure your friend gets insurnace on the thing too. Accidents can always happen and it will really be worth it.

Lots, and lots, and lots of packing peanuts. Make sure that mobo does not move when you close it up. And please remeber to put the mobo in an anti-static bag.

Went to a semi-local computer store and got an anti-static bag and box that shipped with one of the motherboards at the store.

Where can I get those packing peanuts?

And will popcorn work? People have been telling me to try that.

Just use the original box that the mobo came in with the anti static bag, and a fedex box. No need for the peanuts. I've returned several boards this way. If you ship it by the post office, you will have to cover it with a paper sack or other material to cover up the fedex logos.
