How should I outfit my home office?

I've decided that trying to do work on my overly fast, glowing, distracting, vacuum-cleaner loud gaming comp is silly. Then I relized my Epson 740 from five years ago is showing its age.

Hmmmm....

...New toys time!

Except... I have no idea what sort of things I'd need to be as effective as possible at getting things done.

I figured I would outfit the office with a low budget, _very_ quiet computer. The Mac mini comes to mind, however I suppose an iBook or SFFPC might do as well. Any inputs on which would be more useful? I don't do tons of traveling, but do move about a decent bit.

Printer... I have no idea what to get. It just needs to be able to quickly churn out pages of black+white text, while being _very_ reliable and using inexpensive ink.

PDA: I currently have a T3, but am looking at a PPC with WiFi. I'd like it to be on the higher end of the power+capability spectrum. Suggestions?

Also any ideas for other misc. office equipment such as book shelves, good ways of lighting the room, etc. etc. would also be appreciated.

Total budget: ~5k, however spending less is a good thing. 🙂

Thanks guys.

I thought the whole point of working at home was not to have to be efficient (ie, working at midnite and sleeping until 10 is OK 😀 )

As of now I'm gaming at midnight, and sleeping until 10 though. O_O

Make sure the lotion and paper towels are always within easy reach, and that you're hidden from any exterior windows when you want to be. 🙂

Who's paying? If it's you, then quit fooling yourself, you aren't going to be any more productive with new stuff unless your old stuff is technically not up to the task. A quiter PC isn't going to matter.

If it's your company, well, enjoy the new toys.

Dell makes extremely quiet computers. I would open a Dell Small Business account, and see what deals you can work with your rep. You should be able to get a Dimension or Optiplex desktop, Axim X50V,and printer (I recommend Canon) from them for <$2000. Then, get a simple desk, some shelves, and filing cabinet / drawers.
Shelves
Desk
Office Chair

I'll take care of my expenses, you take care of yours, mmkay?

Thanks, that chair looks great! I'll have to try and find one to sit in around here.
