How should I go about quitting my job?

I currently work at K-mart, and I recently got hired at Comp USA. Yesterday I didnt show up for work because of the interview at Comp USA took longer then I expected. I also had to take a drug test right after the interview. So, should I just call and say I quit and not go in, or should I give them my two weeks. But I'm also scared... intimidated. I don't really know what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just go in and talk to your boss and tell them you've got another job and this is their two week notice :) No reason to be intimated, they didn't expect you to want to work there forever i'm sure!

Give them your two weeks. Your new gig will respect that you need to play out your schedule and won't be prone to worrying that you'll bail on them without warning.

Or burn the K-mart down and start at CompUSA the next day.

Call up yor boss and be honest with him/her. If you just stop showing up or call and say I'm not coming in anymore you will be 'burning a bridge'. Someday, when you go to find yet another job, they just might want to talk to K-Mart about what kind of person you were...

Don't know if you went to work, but if not, tell them you have plans already and can't break them. K-mart is so strapped that they need you?

Its not good to burn bridges, although its not like K-mart will be that big a deal when your interviewing for a career type job. I would give the two weeks, but not do anything that you don't have to. If your lucky they will just let you go as soon as you give them the two weeks, who knows.

Tell your old boss you will stay for $45 per hour (with regular raises), a 401k plan and all benefits. A laptop. Cell phone. And lots of free gift certificates for your friends at Anandtech.

If he says ok... stay. If he does not.... then..... I spose you should say.......... CYA!!

Write a resignation letter and say that your new employer wants you to start working within a week, thus you can only give them one week notice instead of two. I have done this twice with no ill effects.

Tell them.

"I appreciate the job I've had here, but CompUSA is in my field of study/interest and I think it is in my best interest to work there."

But definately tell them something. And a face to face talk will say a lot for you. Mainly that you aren't some HS punk who doesn't take responsibilty for his obligations.

Atleast that's what I think.

yah qacwac is rite, it is better to go in in person and tell them the situation, as opposed to jus calling in or not showing up. if u really wanna quit that bad jus give them a week's notice or something, i'm sure they'll understand and they'll jus get another unsuspecting person to work for them.

Be professional and mature.

I am assuming that this is not a "career" type of job, but jobplace is a jobplace, and communication is the key to a happy work life.

Make sure you did "get" the other job first.
Go in to your current job and tell them that you have accepted another job, and negotiate your notice of leave time.

Cable... Do not 'tell them your situation'... it is none of their business.

Tell them 'I quit & I am giving notice"

Be honest.. if they ask why ? .... tell them why you are unhappy working there. Only tell them what is relevant to your job at Kmart.

Kmart has no right to pry into your life away from Kmart..

Just write a letter of resignation and give it to your boss. Select a date that will be your last day (day that a new work schedule comes out would be a good one). Don't put down the company or cause any troubles, just a clear, concise letter. When I quit my job at Staples, I just filled out a change of avaliability sheet and wrote my last day on the little sheet. Didn't talk to da boss or anything.

About.com has a section about resignation letters..

Some good points already. You might also consider what your state's law is regarding "workers' rights"--if it's a state where a boss can fire you immediately for no reason at all, you also are perfectly entitled to quit immediately. Is your particular store known for being brutal or reasonable about letting someone go?
I must say, however, recommendations are valuable for some jobs, even "unrelated" ones.
