How should I go about getting rid of computer parts?

What do you guys do with old computer parts that you have laying around? I've got some random old mother boards and stuff that are not worth fixing. Should I just throw them out with the trash or do places like Best Buy accept circuit boards and stuff in addition to old computers and monitors?

Definitely try to find a place to recycle them. Free if possible, but sometimes you have to pay for a place to take them to get recycled. I don't know if BB accepts all types of electronics to get recycled.

You could always try to just sell one big lot of as-is goods on CL.

Best Buy might take them, they do have a list of accepted items on their website. Some local ordinances will take electronic equipment and recycle it, that's what I do with all the stuff from home and work stuff we toss out.

Do you have a staples near you? Supposedly they take old parts for free.

Oh, reading further into it...maybe they don't take individual pieces, like mb's. I thought they still did. I know in the past I have brought mb's, memory, psu's and drilled hard drives there and they had no issues with it. (they also used to give you in store coupons for it too). It doesn't specify on the site though.

Stuff 'em in an old Dell case you have laying around then set it out on trash day, gone in an hour every time...

It looks like Best buy takes a decent list of stuff. Maybe I can convince them that the MB is a sound card. Looks like I'll have to take 3 items a day for a while till I'm done with it.

If it works, put a post it on it saying so, and leave it on the curb. I guarantee it'll be gone within the hour.

Make sure it's not raining for a few days... I feel bad whenever I see computer/electronics left by the curb, and it's raining the same day.

I just got rid of a computer case for $5 on Craigslist -- guy still has to come pick it up. Craigslist post for stupidly cheap or advertise for free. "Bargain hunters" stock that place and want your "trash".

A 50" Plasma should go quick with, "free 50" Plasma, pick-up only".

Do a search for local e-waste recycling. There are several places in the DC metro area, including HDD shredding. This is what I do.

My mom works at a DC law firm and has to deal with the professional shredders all the time. They told her theres more document and hard drive shredding in DC than any other place in the world.

Could be bullshit, but I suspect not.

I see the mobile shredding trucks all the time.

The US government does not want transparency and must destroy the paper trail.
