How should I go about getting a domain transferred to me?

They are redesigning the site and are giving me the new files when they are done so I will have the files on my server. The problem is changing the dns.

I have my domains registered on namecheap and his is registered on network solutions. The company they current host through has registered the domain and the nameservers are theirs. Should I just have them change the nameservers to mine or have them transfer the domain into my name and give me access to it? Any suggestions?

Your frind is a dumbass. You should ONLY register a domain in your own name. Good luck getting them to transfer, they need to transfer the ENTIRE domain to a new account, not just change the nameservers.

well he knows the guy who owns the company. If he asks him to transfer it I dont think he is going to stiff him. Why couldnt they change the nameservers? Not that they would want to do it that way, but why couldnt they?

I understand what you are saying. I am sure he didnt know any better but now I need to get it to point to my server. I know namecheap will allow domain transfers, but do I need to repay for them? If they have 2 years left and I transfer it, do I pay namecheap for the 2 years it will be there? Is it as simple as requesting the transfer, then they release it to me?

Anyone done this before?

Go to networksolutions.com and click on Customer Service > Transfers > Transfers Within Network Solutions

You will be chanrged to transfer from NS->NC, but probably not within NS (check their site above).

I have to pay namecheap for the transfer but I might not have to pay to transfer within Net Sol. Has anyone transferred within NEtSol before? I dont have an account with them. Will this be a problem?

well if you only want to change the nameservers you don't need to transfer the domain out. just change it within the control panel.

what? it's true. all he wants is to point the domain to his server. registrar transfer is not necessary.

First of all I would not transfer the domain, just change the DNS name servers.

If you transfer your domain from NameCheap to NetSol, your 2 years paid at NameCheap will be lost.

So you will have to pay for 1 or 2 years to NetSol.

thats what I am finding out, except it is the other way around I want it to go from NetSol to Namecheap. It is registered through a local company, not the actual people who own the site. I need to have them change the nameservers if they would be so kind. If not, then I guess I have to transfer it at cost.

for what you need to do (change the nameservers so the domain points to somewhere else) you don't need to transfer out of Netsol. just do the changes from Netsol control panel.

however, if you would like to transfer out of Netsol (which i would suggest that you do), they might have the requirement that you have to be exactly the same person/company who own the domain to be able to request the transfer. in other words, this company who is registered in Netsol as the 'owner' of this domain would have to open an account someplace else (let's say godaddy or namecheap), and then request the transfer from Netsol. the company doesn't have to pay anything to Netsol. it is then relatively easier (if the domain is registered in any other company than Netsol) to transfer ownership of the domain.

if you were to change ownership within Netsol, you do have to pay some kind of ownership transfer fee. at least that's how i know it was.

I cant get into the netsol CP because it is not my domain. So I will need them to change it to my nameserver.

if you transfer out of a registrar, the remaining years that you have with them will also transfer. sometimes the 'gaining registrar' even throw an additional free one year registration on top of the one year minimum that you are required to pay to transfer in.

so, if you still have 2 years remaining and you transfer out, you will only have to pay for one year, but will then have 3 years remaining on that domain (plus another 1 year if the gaining registrar offer that kind of bonus).

yea but that is if I am the one who owns it in the 1st registrar? because I am not the one who owns it.
